The Scholarships & Financial Aid Advisor I is responsible for processing loans and other financial aid. Learns how to administer the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board College Access Loan Program. Learns how to process Alternative Student Loans. Use of professional judgment to solve financial aid problems.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Some experience in planning, organizing, or in higher education.
Must have a State of Texas class âœCâ vehicle operatorâ™s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to meet deadlines and maintain a high level of accuracy, professionalism, and customer service orientation.
Working knowledge of standard office equipment and microcomputers and of word processing and spreadsheet programs. Work individually and as a team member in a dynamic organization.
Good interpersonal communication skills.
Must be literate in the English language and able to comprehend, give, and follow both written and verbal instructions. Organize and make decisions. Relate well with a diverse student population. Work well under pressure. Use tact, diplomacy, and judgment in dealing with all customers.
Some evening and weekend work as well as travel is required. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Must comply with Texas A&M System Policy 07.02-Texas Higher Education Fair Lending Practice. Must be in good standing on all Federal Student Loans. The U.S. Dept. of Education will not grant access to student loan data for any individual who is in default status. Access to such information is a necessity for this position.
Must be able to rectify default status within three months of employment. Good standing must be maintained for continued employment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of current versions of Microsoft products, including Windows and Office. Knowledge of Financial Aid or Banner Student Information System.
Bilingual in Spanish. Knowledge of scholarships & financial aid counseling, verification, rules and regulations. Knowledge of State loan programs. Background in general office conditions with much time spent in contact with students. Ability to develop and make presentations.

Learns to coordinate and perform activities and provide direct support to management pertaining to the Alternative Loan program. Learns to calculate eligibility for Alternative Loans and certify applications received by lenders. Learns to use ELMNet web service to track Alternative Loans. Communicates with lenders on a regular basis to share information between TAMU and lenders pertinent to processing Alternative Loans. Maintains accurate records of eligibility criteria for alternative loans. Assists Assistant Director of Processing with developing, updating, and implementing policies and procedures pertaining to the Alternative Loan program. Learns to assist with the reconciliation of the Alternative Loan program. May assist in training other staff on specialized program or services.
Learns to coordinate and perform activities and provide direct support to management pertaining to the College Access Loan Program. Acts as liaison between the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, various colleges, and departments regarding state loan programs and various individual programs or questions. Learns to assist with coordinating the reconciliation of the College Access Loan Program. Learns to utilize the Coordinating Board s online system for certification and to make updates to accounts. Researches rules, regulations, and peer programs Assists Assistant Director of Processing with developing, updating, and implementing policies and procedures pertaining to the College Access Loan Program. May assist in training other staff on specialized program or services.
Assists with Default Aversion efforts by developing, updating, and implementing departmental financial aid policies and procedures relating to default aversion: - Responsible for default rate tracking and debt management. Responsible for reviewing the cohort file before the official default rate is published and identifying any inaccurate information to be corrected or updated. Initiates letters to students that drop below half time or are graduating. Initiates letter campaign to students who are delinquent on student loans. Works with Asst. Director for compliance to ensure our policies and procedures manual is up-to-date and in compliance. Works with Money Wise Aggie coordinator on presenting material to students. Also helps develop new materials for Money Wise Aggie Program.
Learns to assist in specialized activities of Team Processing: Learns to assist in working specialized reports as needed. Learns to become responsible for answering main team email box in a timely manner. Learns to serve as a back up for over award processing. Learns to serve as back up for Daily Loan Processing
Learns to interpret and maintain knowledge of current federal, state, and institutional policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to financial aid, student employment, and scholarships.
Learns to use discretion and independent judgment to advise and counsel students, parents, and/or prospective students in solving their educational financial problems through scholarships, loans, grants, employment and financial counseling: Learns to respond to questions and counseling needs in-person and by written, phone, and email means from currently enrolled students, prospective students and parents on an as-needed basis. Learns to assist with conducting on and off-campus presentations, seminars, and/or workshops for students (particularly high schools) and possibly for professional development training. May work at resource tables as requested by groups from TAMU, prospective student groups, and others. Learns to provide loan and indebtedness counseling to students on an individual basis. Learns to award, revise and/or approve the awarding of financial aid through the specific controls of program policy and guidelines. -Learns to make adjustments if necessary for compliance issues and submits the corrections through mainframe correction process or submits through FAA Access.
Learns to assist in developing and revising financial aid consumer information material, publications and brochures for currently enrolled students, prospective students and their parents, colleges, and departments. Assists with events for specific audiences and in support of departmental initiatives (e.g. Aggieland Saturday, College Goal Sunday, outreach efforts). Learns to use discretion to respond to varied questions that may require researching and consolidating data regarding financial aid, scholarships, and specialized programs. May attend local, state, and national workshops, and conferences; host and present at various workshops. Minimal travel required. May participate in or lead working groups.
May conduct seminars, give presentations to include classroom and/or professional level for profession and others. Learns to assist in developing and presenting training seminars on pertinent topics and procedures within team area of expertise. Attends training and assistant with presentations. May require driving own vehicle or a TAMU Fleet Vehicle. Performs other duties as assigned.
