Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Farm Advisor and Extension Agronomy Specialist, the Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) will support the applied research and extension projects in agriculture and natural resources for UCCE Farm Advisor and Extension Specialist in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. The position will collaborate with Principal Investigators (PIs) to monitor, assist with and conduct research/demonstrations projects on agronomic crops. This will include water quality, crop variety studies, cotton fusarium race 4, nutrient management, pest management, and other projects as needed.
This position will promote, in all ways consistent with other responsibilities of the position, the affirmative action goals established by the Division.
Special Conditions of Employment: Travel outside of normal business hours
Other Special Conditions of Employment: Ability and means to travel statewide on a flexible basis, work in remote locations under adverse environmental conditions.
Ability to work with pesticides and other agricultural materials.
When conducting field research, must wear personal protective clothing as prescribed by pesticide regulations.
Ability to work well without day-to-day supervision.
Must have Private Applicators license
Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement for job-related travel is available and according to University policies.

Duty 1: Assist with, implement, manage and develop research/demonstration projects at UCCE Tulare, Kings, Fresno Counties, Kern, WSREC, Shafter, Kearney Field Station. Assist Farm Advisor (PI), Extension Agronomist (PI) and other collaborators on agriculture and natural resource field research. Assist with pesticide applications.
Assist in planning and coordinating outreach efforts, including workshops and trainings for growers and industry clientele. Develop tables and graphs for presenting results to scientific community and industry groups using Microsoft Office Suite programs and statistical programs. Speak at educational meetings as needed. Function:Research Percent: 50
Duty 2: Organize field data and conduct statistical analyses. Evaluate data developed as part of the research/demonstration efforts and prepare reports and educational materials as appropriate. Function:Data Analysis Percent: 25
Duty 3: Provide communication to the Principle Investigators, cooperators, and others about projects using web-based reports and other communication methods, written reports, presentations and personal communication.
Summarize research findings into newsletter and journal articles using Microsoft Office Suite and Statgraphics statistical program. Assist in preparing grant proposals and summarizing literature and write project reports to funding agencies. Assist in writing extension publications and peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, and assist in preparing and publish refereed scientific articles detailing the results of the research. Duty 4: Maintain research equipment and maintain safety training and coordination on its proper use for the UCCE Tulare/Kings Cotton/Small Grains/Weed program. Function:Equipment Maintenance Percent: 5
Duty 5: Provide technical assistance, supportive and advisory services to grower/operators and community organizations. Review studies, agricultural literature; attend workshops, seminars, and computer training. Perform minor construction with small research equipment and supplies. Function:Technical Support Percent: 5
Duty 6: Participate in safety trainings and development. Complete other duties as assigned. Function:Other Duties Percent: 5
Job Requirements A Master's degree or close to finishing Masters degree, and experience in applied agricultural research.
Work experience with cotton and other agronomic crops, Fusarium cotton research.
Experience with data analysis with understanding of theory and practical application of research methodology.
Must be able to calibrate equipment for pesticide, seed treatment and fertilizer application.
Experience with operating farm or research equipment.
Experience using scientific equipment for chart and graph making; algebra for calibration, statistics.
Proficient in use of Windows-based computer and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access).
Ability to gather and interpret information, coordinate activities, organize tasks and communicate to cooperators and others. Required
Experience working with Cotton, Grains and Weeds
Experience with pest management (disease, weeds, insects)
Experience in giving oral presentations.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred
