A Technical Specialist assumes responsibility for maintaining the respective section in a manner that supports and complies with the Laboratory Accreditation process. Technical responsibilities include policy and procedure development and maintenance, equipment and consumable inventory and maintenance, staff competency, and quality improvement. This individual may implement and provide oversight for Waived, Moderate and High complexity tests as authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director. This individual may assume responsibility of the Laboratory Director in their absence. In addition this individual participates as a Medical Technologist in the respective section
Follows safety policies and procedures relevant to all assigned duties and encourages all laboratory employees to do likewise. Includes, but not limited to OSHA Health and Safety regulations and Standard Precautions. Assumes responsibility to report defective safety equipment or devices hazardous situations, accidents, safety infractions, or any unusual incidents. Assumes responsibility to maintain section chemical inventory and MSDS sheets.
Requires excellent communication and customer service skills. Answers telephone calls according to organizational standard. Routes telephone calls to appropriate clinical laboratory area, calls critical values to physicians and other clinical healthcare individuals, responds to requests for information regarding laboratory services. Prepares and presents information to other departments as requested. Participates in resolution of patient or customer complaints.
Is accessible to staff and responds to questions and concerns in an appropriate manner. Appoints a “charge” individual in their absence to assume a role of authority for review of necessary documents and/or decision purposes.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

The incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of the use and limitations of laboratory equipment, standards of laboratory methods, laboratory procedures and techniques: manual and microscopic testing, normal test values, and medical terminology. EDUCATION AND/OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent must have the prescribed technical training from an approved school of Medical Technology, in addition to a Bachelor of Science Degree from and accredited school or equivocal recognition of the Medical Technologist designation from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (MT, ASCP) or an equivalently recognized certification agency. Additional specialty certification in the respective section is desirable but not required.
Minimum of (5) five years clinical laboratory experience, in the respective section. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Professional communication skills are required. Ability to work with a culturally diverse patient and employee population in an effective and efficient manner that promotes teamwork, optimizes patient outcomes and efficiently utilizes available resources.
