Job Requisition Number: 24369. The Bancroft Library is one of the most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and unique materials in the United States. This position is responsible for controlling access into the Bancroft Library, monitoring and trouble-shooting the security control system, checking IDs of library users entering the Bancroft Library, providing assistance during emergencies, and assisting library users with directional/information questions. Additionally, the position is responsible for the hiring, training and supervision of Bancroft student employees and the back up to the Security Supervisor and Facilities Manager.
This is a full-time, 100% career appointment. The hours are Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 4 PM.
•Serve as the entry/exit controller for the Bancroft Library, which is within the University Library in Doe. Check IDs/privilege cards of library staff/users and conduct bag checks. Provide assistance to library users by answering directional questions related to locations of rooms, offices, service desks, and people in the library as well as location of subject specialty libraries and affiliated libraries around the campus, and other campus buildings. Provide informational assistance to library users seeking library hours, maps, visitor guides and other informational flyers. Make effective referrals to other service points in the library. Collect and organize directional / informational statistics and daily reports. Maintain and review daily activity journal. Monitor supply of maps, leaflets, and other informational flyers at the security desk. Enforce the library and campus policies on conduct, building codes and California laws applicable to libraries. Enforce the Building Emergency Plan/Library Security Operating Manual during emergency situations and notify key personnel. Act as the door monitor during emergency evacuation procedures to ensure only emergency responders and authorized personnel enter the building and to allow entry only when the building is declared safe to reoccupy. •Maintain constant viewing of surveillance security cameras (CCTV) and the alarm-access control systems for the Bancroft Library. Conduct daily cameras audits. Respond, acknowledge and note alarm alerts on the Security system and report as required. Change setting for doors alarms and cameras for special events. Conduct routine maintenance of C*CURE 800/8000 Security Management System, camera systems, and server room on a weekly basis or as needed. Confirm with UCPD that the camera systems are functioning properly, especially the hard drives for cameras, and request for UCPD to adjust camera quality settings of software for specific cameras and events. Perform established opening and closing procedures specific to the Bancroft Library. Conduct activity audit of the C-CURE alarm journal. Conduct daily walk test of the building alarm system. This test includes daily light checks; weekly checks on the building emergency exit door alarms; and monthly checks of the building door contacts and motion sensors. Maintain operational control and supervision of all the student security monitors, working during the shift. Assign postings, rotate post and break period. Keep security monitors abreast of current information, policy changes, etc. Assist the Head of Security in training new hired personnel. Promote appropriate behavior, responsibility and accountability among staff members. Enforce the Library Policy on Conduct, Rules of Conduct in Campus Buildings, and California laws applicable to libraries and other policies related to security. Respond to incident/complaint reports or to any emergency situation, notify UCPD and superiors, take appropriate action, conduct investigation and complete the required security report forms. Report illegal, suspicious, criminal activity to UCPD, notify supervisor and complete security report. Review security reports from previous shift and pass-on information that may be useful to their shift. Provide assistance to faculty, staff, patrons and the public in general. Assist with facilities escort when directed by superiors. Maintain inventory for all security equipment. Act as liaison with UCPD. Coordinate with Bancroft staff the delivery and access to high level security areas. Hire, train and supervise Bancroft student security employees (9).
•Provide training in the technical usage of the security system to Library Security staff co-workers. Handle multiple tasks and work independently; provide clear instructions to individuals and groups. Update library security schedules, and debrief incoming shift with daily events and activities that cross over to the next shift. Maintain and update events as needed. Coordinate Bancroft events and access to library spaces for instructional sessions, donor events, etc.
•Attend library and departmental meetings.
•Complete and submit required security reports in a professional and timely manner. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.Have a minimum of 2 years’ of related work experience. Excellent inter-personal skills for dealing with subordinate staff, other Library employees, regular Library patrons as well as disruptive individuals attracted to the Library. Be committed to a high level of public service as well as firm treatment of persons who threaten the safety of people and the orderly research environment of the Library. Demonstrate effective management skills, experience in training, scheduling and supervising personnel. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Must have proficient computer skills and experience in the operation and applications related to electronic security systems, particularly the Software House, C-cure 800 Alarm and CCTV surveillance system – Installed Unit and Intrasa and dedicated camera platform. Have an excellent attendance record and the availability to work flexible hours. Position is subject to background check.
