Smith College, located in Northampton, Massachusetts, seeks a collaborative, inventive and experienced leader to serve as its next dean of admission. Reporting to Audrey Smith, vice president for enrollment, the dean of admission will join an exceptional team and have the unique opportunity to further enrollment success at a leading women’s college committed to inclusivity and access.
Founded in 1871, Smith College opened in 1875 with 14 students. Today, Smith is among the largest women’s colleges in the United States, with more than 2,600 students from 48 states and 68 countries. Smith is located on a 147-acre campus known for its spectacular physical beauty, and the college continues to provide women of high ability and promise an education of uncompromising quality.
The dean of admission provides vision, leadership and strategy for all aspects of Smith’s undergraduate admission operation, serving as the driving force to insure the enrollment of an exceptional student body. Over the past decade Smith has experienced notable success in enrollment, and the dean of admission will be expected to build on current strengths, continuously enhance the college’s visibility and competitive standing, and manage sometimes competing enrollment imperatives so that all of the college’s goals are reflected in each incoming class. As a highly visible advocate and representative for Smith, the dean of admission fosters relationships throughout the college and will be expected to build connections with prospective students, college counselors and Smith alumnae all over the world.
The ideal candidate will be able to provide strategic direction and leadership to an admission program that is well-executed, forward-thinking and student-centered. The personal qualities of integrity, exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, significant strategic and analytical capacity, technological savvy and an inclusive work style are imperative. Smith’s new dean of admission will possess a bachelor’s degree and five to seven years of relevant experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. A master’s degree is highly desired. Prior supervisory experience is required.
