National High School Institute: This is a 7-week summer position, full-time (day and evening commitment), starting June 25th – August 12th, 2018. Position includes room and board. Salary is TBD based on qualification/experience.
This position is for the National High School Institute located in Evanston at Northwestern University.
The Dorm Director is the legal guardian of the students during the summer in the absence of their parents [IN LOCO PARENTIS]. The Dorm Director is responsible for the health and well-being of the students. Any issue pertaining to the health and well-being of the students is directly handled by the Dorm Director. He/She is also the disciplinarian for any instances occurring outside of the curricular program. As such, the dorm director must be well-versed in the NHSI's disciplinary policies and willing to enforce them at all times. The Dorm Director is one of the faces of this program: He/She must be a person who is always modelling responsible behavior for both students and staff. He/She must have great leadership skills. The Dorm Director must demonstrate strength in energy, patience, dedication to the history and future of NHSI Debate Institute division, and a deep understanding of the dedication and commitment of the job.
Specifics of the job:
Show up to campus a day before the staff to pick up printed materials
Collect the dorm keys from the housing office
Coordinate the move-in day with the NHSI office (i.e., collect classroom keys and equipment)
Speak with on-campus liaisons (i.e. housing, housekeeping, and health services)
Meet with Senior Debate Institute staff.
During the program:
Lead and coordinate three "move-in" days; one for the staff, two for the students.
Run a morning-long dorm orientation for the staff which serves to train them as resident assistants (RAs).
Along with the Division Director and Associate Division Director, be a direct supervisor to the dorm staff for the entirety of the summer.
Administrate the arrival of our 100+ students and deliver all dorm orientation materials and information to the students on their arrival day.
Coordinate scheduling and getting students to health service appointments.
Act as the IN LOCO PARENTIS when it is necessary to accompany students to the emergency room.
The Dorm Director is privy to and responsible for the health history of each student. It is the dorm director's responsibility to be knowledgeable on the health needs and issues of any students, and to treat those issues with confidentiality.
Coordinate maintenance needs of the dorm with the campus Housing Services and the dorm's Housekeeping staff.
Delegate authority and assign tasks when necessary to the assistant dorm director and dorm staff.
Be in direct contact with the parents of students who are having health or disciplinary issues.
Be present at the daily Institute meetings to give dorm-related news, instruction and guidance.
Spend every night of the program sleeping inside the dorm on the faculty wing. The dorm director's room is always accessible via doorbell to all students and staff. He/She is always on call for emergencies.
Oversee the daily delivery of mail to the students.
Degree in Education or comparable experience
Experience working with teenagers in an advisory position
Self-motivated, strong work ethic and commitment to collaborative work.
Supervisory experience, preferably in a fast-paced academic environment
