EDUCAUSE (http://www.educause.edu), a highly creative, entrepreneurial, national nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education through the use of information technology, invites applications for the position of Digital Managing Editor to support its award-winning magazine EDUCAUSE Review. This is a full-time, exempt position with the preferred work location in the Louisville, CO, office, though out-of-state candidates will be considered. Pay is commensurate with experience.
EDUCAUSE is seeking a Digital Managing Editor to oversee the day-to-day online editorial management of EDUCAUSE Review.EDUCAUSE Review is the association's open-access digital and bimonthly print flagship publication for the higher education IT community. With 22,000 distributed copies, the print magazine looks at current developments and trends in information technology, how they may affect the college/university as an institution, and what they mean for higher education and society. The online version comprises broader coverage, including the content of the print magazine plus feature articles, practical advice and guidance, interactive elements, and multimedia about managing and using information resources in higher education. The publication has won numerous editorial and design awards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Partner with magazine publisher to manage daily workflow and scheduling of the online magazine while ensuring that the online presence is up-to-date and reflected in promotional elements (e.g., table of contents, email alerts); oversee digital editorial production process
Source subjects and authors
Supervise association production editor, freelance editors and writers
Closely work with editors, member volunteers, and staff authors to create online content
Create digitally native content such as infographics, videos, interactive experiences, data visualization, and photo essays
Manage multiple projects in a fast-paced and collaborative, cross-organizational working environment
Monitor and report on web presence and traffic; use data and metrics to inform and guide story structure, focus, format, creation, and engagement
Optimize content for distribution, SEO, and all social channels
Assist in production of sponsored digital content
Work with the association’s multiple constituencies as required to ensure the magazine meets member needs; assist in management of member advisory committee with other editorial staff
Research and Strategy
Stay abreast of emerging technology and content distribution methods; manage the pipeline of editorially related improvements, in collaboration with the publisher and editorial team
Work with the magazine publisher and the corporate team to propose enhancements and products related to the online magazine; conceive new editorial and magazine products based on reader needs and market insights
Education and Experience
BA or equivalent experience
At least 5 years of demonstrated online editorial experience with exceptional writing, editing, and digital media skills
Minimum of 2 years of previous experience overseeing the day-to-day production of an online publication
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with sourcing authors, overseeing editors, and keeping an editorial calendar
Ability to prioritize and focus under fast-paced pressure while managing multiple tasks and projects; ability to be flexible and meet deadlines in a fluid and fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, editorially and technologically
Strong proficiency in the use of digital technology, including online CMS platforms such as Sitecore
Strong manager of staff
Strong skills in using analytics and metrics to drive consumption, SEO, and social engagement
Proven editorial instincts and excellent interpersonal skills
Well-developed communication and process/project management skills; sound decision-making skills coupled with the ability to craft creative solutions to editorial challenges
Intellectual curiosity and passion for educational content and an eagerness to stay abreast of the ever-changing nature of software tools
Knowledge of the U.S. higher education market
Experience with Google analytics dashboards, custom content through multiple channels (personalization)
Local to or willing to relocate to the Boulder/Denver metropolitan area (no relocation assistance provided)
EDUCAUSE is a fast-paced organization with an ambitious agenda and a staff that is committed to the mission. This job may experience high work demands under tight timelines. Limited travel maybe required to support EDUCAUSE conferences/events, team operations, and external events relevant to the position.
