Miss Porter's School
January 9, 2018
Full Time - Faculty
Founded in 1843, Miss Porter’s School is an independent, single-sex, boarding school that is fully dedicated to its mission of preparing young women to “shape a changing world.” Located in the historic New England village of Farmington, CT, Miss Porter’s school maintains a diverse student-body of around 315 girls in grades 9-12 and is committed to hiring, developing, and retaining a world class faculty. We expect that all of our teachers will be among the best in the nation.
Miss Porter’s is also committed to offering a distinctive, student-centered curriculum that helps girls to build skills in the traditional liberal arts while also specifically preparing them for successful careers in a dynamic, fast-paced future. We are in the process of designing a more interdisciplinary and experiential curriculum that will require students to explore and address authentic problems. This work will be augmented by a personalized program of instruction in core academic skills. Through this curriculum, students will be exposed to multiple methods for addressing a problem and will be required to become -- in the words of our mission -- “informed, bold, resourceful and ethical global citizens.”
This role includes the following responsibilities:
Oversight of T.I.E. diploma certification and curriculum
Integration of T.I.E. into other areas of the curriculum
Management of innovation and design space
Teaching and extra-curricular responsibilities as assigned
We seek teachers who, first and foremost, are excited by the vision outlined above. Prospective teaching candidates should have expertise in at least one field, and an interest in and ability to teach in an interdisciplinary setting. They should also be adept at managing a dynamic, active, student-centered classroom, and be committed to teaching in ways that are the best for girls. Ideal candidates will be skilled in curriculum design in the UbD framework and familiar with project-based learning, authentic assessment, and standards-based grading. Faculty members are expected to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school and share in residential-life responsibilities. Hence, an interest in coaching or coordinating extra-curricular activities and a willingness to fulfill evening and weekend duties is a must. All candidates must have strong written and oral communications skills and must be willing to work in a collaborative environment. Perhaps most importantly, candidates must have a high degree of cross-cultural competency and be committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of school life. Our teachers work to create equitable classrooms in which students have equal access and opportunities to learn and achieve to their fullest potential. Last, but not least, a sense of humor is always appreciated.
Working at a boarding school is a demanding job, and, thus, we seek candidates who are willing to work long, hard hours when school is in session, knowing that their work is worth it because they are changing lives for the better. Miss Porter’s provides a competitive and robust set of benefits to its faculty, which include significant opportunities for professional growth. Miss Porter’s generally provides housing for its faculty, but unlike most boarding schools, does not ask academic teaching faculty to live in dormitories.
Miss Porter's School educates young women to become informed, bold, resourceful and ethical global citizens. We expect our graduates to shape a changing world.
In keeping with our founder's vision, Miss Porter's School joins tradition with innovation to provide an exemplary education to young women. Generation after generation, our leadership is defined by our ability to ...articulate how young women think, how young women learn, and why gender matters. Within our legacy lies our future.
