To provide circulation and user services in the McCarthy Library during hours not covered by the Circulation Coordinator. This position also provides first-tier reference services to library users at both campuses, referring complex questions to librarians, and participates in collection management and other special projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform full range of circulation desk responsibilities, including charges/discharges/renewals and course reserves, processing holds and interlibrary loan requests, answering patrons' questions and helping them find items, handling basic billing issues, and maintaining a high level of customer service.
Provide first-tier reference services (finding known items, requesting books and articles, basic database searches) to library users at both campuses; referring more complex questions to a librarian.
Responsible for opening, closing and securing the building, ensuring proper security procedures are followed.
Provide a superior level of customer service to all users of the library.
Assist Circulation Coordinators and Librarians with hiring, training, and evaluating student workers.
Help maintain print collections by shifting library materials to make effective use of available space, straightening books, and ensuring proper call number order.
Register and update borrower records and create new accounts.
Record patron interactions and other statistics.
Help maintain library computers and other library technology; call for service of computers, printers, and facilities issues.
Oversee student workers in circulation and reserve areas during evening and weekend shifts in absence of the Circulation Coordinator.
Working knowledge of library public services and circulation policies and procedures.
Knowledge of the principles of materials organization within the library, including the Library of Congress classification system and location codes.
Working knowledge of the online public access catalog (OPAC), integrated library system (ILS), and online databases, as well as the operation and basic maintenance of various office and audio-visual equipment.
Working knowledge of computers, printers, and applicable types of software applications used by the department.
Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the needs of a diverse college environment.
Abilities and Skills:
Ability to listen attentively, and communicate with tact and diplomacy, maintaining confidentiality when necessary (e.g., taking telephone messages, providing services to users, and communicating with other library staff, as appropriate).
Analytical, detail-oriented, flexible and accurate.
Work well both independently and as part of a team.
Must be able to be present in the workplace during assigned shifts.
Must be reliable, dependable, have a strong work ethic, and provide exemplary customer service.
Strong organization, oral/written communication, interpersonal, administration, and problem resolution.
College degree required.
Minimum of one year of library-related experience, preferably in an academic library.
Work Location: Both Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles) and Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles)
