: A Manager for the Verification & Validation, Uncertainty Quantification, and Credibility Processes Department is needed to join the 1540 management team\. This role provides the opportunity to provide project management, technical leadership, and teaming in these functional areas, applying them to NW design, analysis, and computational mechanics code teams\. You may be called upon to engage in any of the following roles/activities in this role: **Department/Group/Center Leadership** + Work closely with a 1540 management team and more broadly across management of 1500 analysis groups in a wide range of planning, technical and business operations+ Engage and understand NW program objectives for credibility and uncertainty quantification+ Ensure that 1500 analysis teams are well\-supported in their efforts to ensure they have evidence for credibility in their results+ Manage day\-to\-day operational, technical, and administrative responsibilities of the department+ Oversee and manage members of the workforce within the department, to include supporting the professional and career development of staff members+ Develop the appropriate balance between research, development, and application to steward the department's capabilities for the future, while ensuring customer's expectations and mission needs are met+ Coordinate staff recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, work assignments, salary, and recognition and disciplinary actions+ Ensure a culture that promotes safety and security, as well as a diverse and inclusive work environment+ Serve as a derivative classifier \(DC\) **Technical Leadership** + Develop and maintain relationships with management and staff in 1540, 1500 and throughout the laboratories+ Provide technical leadership, working with a broad range of organizations, including 1540, 1500, 8200, 8900, 1400, 1300, 1800 management to develop verification and validation capabilities, including codes+ Develop and maintain collaborative teaming relationships with managers across 1000 and other key partner organizations across the Laboratory+ Participate in various Division 1000 and Laboratory initiatives+ Develop and grow Sandia Partnership Projects \(SPP\) that align with Sandia's mission and help grow the department's capabilities **Programmatic Development and Leadership** + Provide programmatic leadership within the ASC Program in the areas of verification and validation methods+ Program management for various projects within the Advanced Simulation and Computing \(ASC\) V&V and ATDM program elements+ Support program development and management for both NW and WFO customers, including other government agencies \(e\.g\., DoD\), industry \(e\.g\., Goodyear\) and other external collaborators \(e\.g\., AWE\)+ Build and maintain partnerships with academia and professional societies in the specific area of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification Required: + Bachelor's AND Master's in a science or engineering discipline+ Eight years of related experience+ Experience or educational background in verification and validation methods and practice+ Experience with engineering science, computational science and software product development+ Experience with project or program leadership+ Experience working with a variety of partners and customers+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance Desired: + PhD in a science or engineering discipline+ Experience building and leading teams+ Experience within or leading an engineering team with a focus on computational analysis+ Experience with or working knowledge of Sandia's nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship and/or life extension programs+ Research experience and a record of external engagement+ Record of successful program development activities+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills+ Experience working with or on the ASC verification and validation program+ Two years of leadership experience+ Active, current DoE clearance Department Description: The mission of the Verification & Validation, Uncertainty Quantification, and Credibility Processes Department \(1544\) is to provide research, development, and application of mathematical and experimental techniques to assess the credibility of physics\-based computational simulations\. The multi\-disciplinary team, experienced in simulation and experimentation, draws from a wide range of disciplines, including fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, radiation effects, solid and structural mechanics, heat transfer, numerical methods, optimization, statistics, and risk assessment, to support the laboratories mission\. Verification determines whether a computational model accurately represents the conceptual\-mathematical model of a physical process, and that the computational model is solved correctly\. This requires an exacting knowledge of models and their numerical approximations when implemented into codes\. Validation determines, quantitatively, the degree of agreement between experimental data and simulation data, including their respective uncertainties\. Uncertainty quantification is a key element of validation and it encompasses a broad range of mathematical and statistical analysis methods\. The combination of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification establishes credibility in our computational models, which are then employed in making high\-consequence risk\-informed decisions\. The analysis tools developed in 1544 can be used to \(1\) focus and prioritize research and development expenditures, \(2\) mitigate risk through exploration of system design alternatives, \(3\) optimize products and process in the presence of both uncertain and variable parameters, and \(4\) support risk\-informed decision making based on statistically\-quantified data\.
