Develop, research, and write original, compelling editorial content for The Common Reader, Washington University in St. Louis’s online “Journal of the Essay.” This position requires a thorough knowledge of current science, current events, as well as vital issues and questions familiar to an educated, academic audience.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research topics including science, social science, economics, political science, history, the humanities, and literature for original editorial, blog, and article ideas.
Write and refine researched article idea into compelling, stylish, grammatically correct prose. Staff writer will produce a minimum of two blog entries weekly of at least 500 words each; weekly essay, article or review of 2,000 words or more; one feature of 3,500 words monthly.
Procure or provide leads on photographs, illustrations, or other visual elements (preferably in the public domain) to accompany published articles.
Provide occasional editing assistance—including headline writing, line- and copy-editing, and editorial direction—to journal staff of editor and managing editor.
Perform other duties as assigned.
B.A. or B.S., with post-bachelor’s matriculation either current, or in-process.
Master’s degree in social science, history, specialized study of humanities, or literature.
Excellent writing skills, oral communication skills, an ability to communicate obscure or esoteric ideas and animate them in vibrant, compelling prose.
Thorough knowledge of grammar, political history, philosophy, music, popular music, sports, and multiple other subjects both popular and academic a definite plus.
The hiring range for this position is $18.44 - $23.52 per hour.
