Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education
The Department of Recreation Management & Physical Education (RMPE) in the Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) at Appalachian State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Health, Physical Education, and Coaching (HPEC) program to begin August 1, 2018. Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring students in the fields of health and physical education, supervising field experiences, engaging in germane scholarly activity, and participating in university and professional service.
Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate in Physical and/or Health Education or a related discipline. ABD candidates will be considered, pending successful completion of degree requirements by position start date. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, and have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to improve access to higher education for under-represented groups. Desirable characteristics include evidence of experience and/or expertise focusing on, but not limited to each of the following:
Teaching K-12 and/or Higher Education HPE
Possession of or eligibility to obtain a NC Educator’s License
Supervision of clinical and/or field-based teaching experiences
Administration of academic and/or instructional programs
Scholarly productivity and professional service
The Department of RMPE is comprised of Recreation Management; Health, Physical Education, & Coaching; and Physical Education Activity programs. The HPEC program offers a dual Health and Physical Education undergraduate teacher licensure major, as well as a minor in Sport Science and Coaching and a concentration in Public Health. The BCHS is the newest and second largest college at Appalachian State University, with over 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students served by 150 faculty and staff. Committed to interprofessional innovation and collaboration in teaching, scholarship, service and clinical outreach, the BCHS is transforming the health and quality of life for the communities we serve. Beginning in 2018 the College will occupy a new state-of-the-art 203,000 square foot facility that will be the cornerstone of the ASU Health Sciences Campus. The RMPE department will keep their offices on main campus to continue their close proximity to the gymnasium and other recreational teaching areas. Appalachian State has approximately 18,000 students, primarily in bachelors and masters programs in both liberal arts and applied fields. Nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina, the region is renowned for its scenic beauty and outdoor recreation such as hiking, skiing, biking, fishing, and canoeing. Boone is conveniently located approximately two hours from Asheville, Charlotte, and Greensboro, NC.
