The University of Maryland,Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine (SOM) is currently seeking a Laboratory Research Specialist to operate within the Translational Genomics Laboratory to provide support for laboratory operations, perform routine testing, clinical assay development and validation . The ideal candidate will have experience in Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) compliant laboratory or a similar regulated environment.

Performs routine and advanced clinical testing activities including sample accessioning, various DNA isolation techniques, genotyping, DNA sequencing (including next-generation DNA Sequencing), data analysis and report preparation.
Observes and enforces all laboratory policies to ensure compliance of molecular testing assays for accrediting agencies such as (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP).
Adheres to compliance with regulatory agencies during all testing activities and documentation (including (CLIA) and (CAP).
Performs quality control and maintenance on lab equipment as assigned by supervisor.
Participates in the writing of protocol manuals, educational materials, and evaluation and training materials under supervision of the supervisor and laboratory director.
Coordinates and performs collection, validation, and analysis of data, and coordinates review with laboratory supervisor.
Assists in the evaluation of new instrumentation to be included in the lab.
Interfaces with laboratory clients (including basic research labs/researchers and health care team members).
May perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; developing education materials and training materials; assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for clinical research laboratory experimentation and studies; and ordering supplies.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Epidemiology, or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Three (3) years' experience in laboratory research including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization, including standard molecular techniques and next-generation sequencing. Prior experience in a CLIA-compliant laboratory or similar regulated environment preferred. ASCP or Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist certification desirable.

May require training related to occupational Blood Borne Pathogen safety and health, environmental compliance and shipping of hazardous materials.
