One reason for the area's popularity is the fact that it gets considerably less rain than the west side of the state. Hood River is also a major fruit producing area, with apple, pear and nut orchards in the hills and valleys above the river. Mount Hood has hundreds of miles of hiking, skiing and snowmobile trails, huge tracts of forest land, pristine alpine lakes and two major ski resorts.
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital has 25 beds and an active medical staff of more than 160 providers.
