The position reports to the Director of HR consulting at Harvard Medical School and is part of the HMS HR Consultant team. This position will support the Wyss Institute at Harvard University and also work very closely with the Director of Operations and Director of Administration at the Institute.
The HR Manager position is responsible for providing responsive, strategic, transparent human resources consulting services to management in the areas of recruitment and compensation, employee relations, performance management, organizational design and development, change management, training and development strategies.
Contributes to the Institute's business strategy by helping leadership to identify, prioritize, and build organizational and workforce capabilities.
Manages and resolves complex employee relations issues.
Provides appropriate and effective advice and coaching to employees and managers as needed. Advises and coaches managers to implement effective performance management to create and sustain a high performance workforce.
Actively partners with managers, staff and bargaining unit representatives to address a variety of workplace issues in a strategic way that provides tangible value and identifies new opportunities.
Promotes a strong leadership and coaching culture. Assists department leaders and managers to provide employees with development opportunities and ensures that they are able to meet current and future performance standards.
Understands opinions and anticipates needs and concerns; acts as a bridge to help all parties understand each other's perspective and come to consensus.
Pursues solutions that balance individual, organization and constituent needs and guides parties towards those views and options
Analyzes trends and metrics to assist the Wyss Leadership team with more informed decisions.
Identifies trends, develops and monitors programs and results. Supports managers in forecasting and planning their staffing needs in line with the Institute's strategy.
Participates in meetings such as the: classification meetings, HR consultant meetings at HMS
Collaborates within Harvard Medical School HR as well as with Longwood Medical Area and Harvard University HR colleagues

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in a multi-discipline Human Resources environment (examples include recruitment, training, compensation, benefits and performance management).
Masters' degree and/or HR certification preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of employment laws and strong experience managing employee relations issues required. Academia, research Institution or industry experience preferred. Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in written communications. Experience working in unionized environment a plus. Ability to multi-task, make independent judgments and timely sound decisions.
