The Division of Neonatology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist Assistant in the Biomedical Image Computing Group. Our research group works on the development of new mathematical and computational algorithms to manipulate and analyze biomedical image data. Our work is currently motivated by the study of brain anatomy and the patterns of its change over time in two broad clinical areas: fetal and pre-term infant brain development. Specifically, we have most recently contributed new approaches to imaging fetal brain structural connectivity and functional activity. Our work importantly aims to address both basic methodological development, together with its practical application in real clinical problems, by working closely with a range of clinical collaborators and neuroscientists. The Research Scientist Assistant will be an integral member of the lab applying their scientific knowledge to the organization, maintenance, and development of sophisticated image database structures that support the lab's studies containing images and files, which contain anonymized subject information. In working with the data they will also independently run computing tools on these data files to create 3D images, graphs and tables of results for publication.
The analysis done by the Research Scientist Assistant will directly contribute to the preparation of manuscripts on the results. The Research Scientist Assistant will independently take the lead on the oversight of quality control for data collection and management. With the Principal Investigator, they will develop protocols for internal audits on data completeness, validity and accuracy; create a schedule for data quality activities and independently initiate actions; design and produce internal reports on data quality; edit and update related manuals of operations/protocols and train lab members. The Research Scientist Assistant will also promote a proactive and professional relationship with internal and external staff while actively participating in meeting and/or training as required. The Research Scientist Assistant will assist in the orientation and mentoring or new and existing lab members and will assist the Principal Investigator in the organization and direction of work for students, volunteers, and trainees in the lab.
50% Analyzing Research Results and Developing Conclusions:
Assist in validation of automated data processing methods.
Data collection and results analysis
Attend scans to collect data
Run mathematical and statistical tools on imaging data.
Organize imaging and other data files sent to the group for analysis.
25% Basic input relating to research design:
Design, create and revise systems and procedures as necessary to ensure quality, efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory operations.
Assist Principal Investigator to coordinate activities of laboratory staff on and between research projects as necessary.
Independently contribute to and assist with the design, creation, drafting and editing of project-specific written communications (e.g., journal articles, reviews, meeting summaries and progress reports).
10% Administration and other duties:
Plan and attend staff committee meetings; and coordinate follow-up activities.
Participate in and support quality assessment and improvement activities.
Participate in professional development opportunities to expand knowledge base for the position.
Perform other duties and projects as requested regardless of their administrative nature.
Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering, Computer Science, Applied Math, or related field in the life, physical, or social sciences with appropriate technical experience and 1 year of relevant research experience.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to proactively communicate with supervisor and collaborators regarding research progress and lab management. Experience analyzing and reporting data from experiments.
