The position of Chief Medical Physicist is located at the Rock Hill/Lancaster Radiation Therapy practices located in Northern South Carolina is the one of the LCI’s busiest radiation oncology department, treating more than 700 patients a year. The department is equipped with two Varian linacs, one of which is scheduled for replacement with a TrueBeam with FFF modes, Varian Advanced Imaging, and a 3D surface image guidance system. Additional equipment includes a GE CT scanner. The department has active SBRT and SRS programs. Varian Eclipse and Aria are used for treatment planning and the electronic medical record. Research opportunities in motion management, SBRT/SRS planning and delivery and optical surface monitoring are available for interested candidates. Interested applicants are invited to join this dynamic practice consisting of 3 radiation oncologists, 3 nurses, 11 radiation therapists, 2 dosimetrists and 1 physicist.
The Chief Medical Physicist works closely with the Radiation Oncologists; directly supervises the radiation therapy Medical Physicists and Medical Dosimetrists; and indirectly supervises the work of radiation therapists; and provides scientific and technical expertise on the safe and effective delivery of radiation therapy treatments.
Leads systematic oversight for the commissioning, acceptance, calibration, maintenance, clinical application, and quality assurance of all of the radiation therapy equipment and services provided at the assigned location.
Maintains documentation of all commissioning, acceptance, and quality assurance activities and provides these documents for review.
Develops and presents goals and work plans describing existing and/or future physics projects, and produces a staff rotation to ensure that all medical physics and medical dosimetry tasks are completed with appropriate peer review.
Creates, maintains, and updates medical dosimetry and physics competencies, and ensures staff are able to independently perform all new competencies within 12 months of new practices.
Develops and maintains scientific and technical skills to assist with the provision, supervision, and development of all existing and new medical physics services performed in the clinic.
Procures, receives, and arranges for the storage of radioactive materials.
Participates and leads in the development and research of continuous quality improvement of radiation oncology practices impacting clinical treatment and initiates and participates in the analysis and development of medical physics projects from the initial state to clinical implementation in collaboration with the leadership.
Facilitates the effective provision of radiation therapy physics service; acts as a liaison with other staff and disciplines outside of radiation oncology, including but not limited to, radiology and neurosciences.
Attends seminars, courses, and conferences to enable personal and professional development to contribute to the growth of medical physics practices.
Provides and assists with lectures, tutorials, and practical instruction for different audiences to advance knowledge related to radiation therapy practices and radiation physics.
Maintains the Quality Management Program for radiation oncology and serves as the primary contact with the radiation regulatory agencies; serves as a member of the radiation safety committee; and leads quality improvement efforts related to radiation therapy practices.
Develops physics department capital budget and provides written justification for requested items.
Takes a leading role in departmental projects; plan project execution; monitor and document schedules and deadlines; communicate status; and formally document the close of projects.
Serves as the assigned department's reporting entity to the appropriate agency determined necessary.
Physical Requirements General hospital environment with exposure to radiation, chemicals, pathogens, and patient body fluids. Must be able to lift, push and pull, in excess of 100 lbs. Frequent walking, standing, stooping and reaching. Manual dexterity required: Heavy concentration with computers. Must speak, write, and understand English fluently. Requires intact sense sight, hearing, smell, and touch.
Education, Experience and Certifications Doctoral degree or Masters in Medical Physics or related physical science is required.
Board certification in Therapeutic Radiologic Physics by the Board of Radiology required.
Minimum of five year's clinical experience as a Therapeutic Medical Physicist required and previous experience as a Chief of Physics or in a leadership role preferred.
