Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Program Supervisor.
Responsible for performing advanced lab duties with minimal direction from the Principal Investigator, Dr. Aravinda Chakravarti. The successful candidate will join a laboratory developing and utilizing cutting-edge, high throughput genetic, functional genomic and computational technologies for dissection of complex genetic diseases, and expected to perform genetic analyses in this research laboratory on a number of human disease projects and working with mouse models of human disease. Assists the Principal Investigator in organizing and maintaining the structure of the lab, coordinate technical activities, and managing day to day activities (up to15 pre-and post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians and volunteers). Extensive experience in rodent models and experience in basic to moderate cell culture techniques and laboratory methods/techniques associated with genetics and molecular biology. Must have excellent organizational, communication and computer skills. Experience with on-line ordering systems and database programs preferred. Excellent record-keeping skills are required for the position, including organization of both physical and electronic records. The position will be required to work flexible hours due to demands of experiments, completion of regulatory documents by deadlines, receipt of samples, and supervision of staff completing demanding experiments.
Supervisory Assist in recruitment, hire, train, completing employee performance reviews, and supervise research technicians, project assistants, and volunteers for the lab and ensures all lab policies and procedures are being implemented. Onboarding of new pre-and post-doctoral students in the lab. Serve as lab emergency contact, and enforce compliance with safety and lab procedures among all lab personnel. Act as liaison between lab and NYU departments on issues such as budget management, fixed asset inventory, regulatory compliance (DLAR, IACUC, IRB Environmental Safety), and purchasing. Help principal investigator in assigning responsibilities for individual instruments and for laboratory maintenance to coordinate and prioritize work-flow in the lab and use of lab space so as to ensure timely and fair turnaround for all ongoing projects. Manage lab safety programs to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for processes utilized in the lab. Facilitate the development of websites, pamphlets, and posters to educate users on results of lab research. Hold primary responsibility for checkout of departing lab members, including transfer of notebooks, electronic files, biological materials and all records pertaining thereto.
Advanced Lab Duties - Extensive experience in rodent models: maintaining mouse colonies, setting up timed mating for embryonic developmental stage-specific investigations, genotyping of mice, dissection of mice for anatomical and histological studies, harvesting tissues for molecular and phenotypic analyses, performing electrocardiography on mice, preparing metaphase slides from blood, acteylcholinesterase staining of gut tissues. Oversee animal colony and ensure that animal utilization, which is maintained by lab members, stays within budgetary constraints and according to IACUC (anim al welfare) rules in coordination with the PI. Experience in basic to moderate cell culture techniques and laboratory methods/techniques associated with genetics and molecular biology such as: isolation of DNA and RNA, PCR, quantitative real-time PCR, DNA electrophoresis, Southern blotting, DNA cloning, DNA sequencing, quantitative and qualitative analyses of DNA and RNA molecules, as well as other functional and enzymatic assays. Prepares buffers and solutions/reagents; contributes to the maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies; manages sample inventories and locations, concentrations, and volumes in the database system; conducts routine radiation surveys and safety tests. Oversee management of the laboratory plasmid and cell line inventories, as well as shared reagents including antibodies, cytokines, etc. Performs routine and advanced technical tasks, and assists in the general maintenance of the lab, such as prepare stock reagents and maintain inventory of the labs supplies. Performs experiments using established protocols and procedures, and records results of experiments. Performs all general and advanced procedures within the lab
Program Coordination: Ordering and tracking of laboratory supplies. Negotiate discounts for key reagents and equipment with company representatives. Communicate with central services to maintain supplies of autoclaved materials and other reagents. Ensure prompt unpacking and organization of delivered equipment and supplies. Coordinates the repair and preventative maintenance of lab equipment. Assist in the planning of pre-and post doc fellows and PI experiments as well as in the interpretation of results. Ability to instruct and provide guidance to junior level lab staff in analysis and interpretation of the results of experiments. May be required to take responsibility for all procedures in the absence of the Principal Investigator or Scientist. Manage and update Chemical inventories.
Financial/Protocol Development Develops draft budget, monitors budget (reviews Core Billing charges, animal charges, etc.) for several grants and recommends staffing levels based on reviewed protocol in collaboration with the financial analyst and grants manager of the Center/Institute. Draft and develop animal protocols as needed together with Principal Investigator. Assist in the preparation of funding and regulatory reports to funding agencies and internal areas such as DLAR, IACUC, IRB Environmental Safety, etc. Assist with preparation of grant proposals, publications and presentations as needed.
Continuous Learning: Maintains and updates technical knowledge. Attend national and local meetings and conferences to remain current on lab management strategies and tools, and the labs science area. Follows current literature and web postings regarding new trends in areas of importance to lab operations
Developing Procedures - Implement new procedures and protocols to support experiments. Participates actively in developing, recommending and implementing new approved procedures, or modifications to existing protocols and procedures to the Principal Investigator.
Communication/Relationship with Others - Cooperates, communicates and relates well to all levels of Medical Center. Listens carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answer questions or obtain needed information in an effective manner. Maintains the confidentiality of all research information.
Judgment/Decision-Making - Is able to recognize problems as they occur; and through the application of appropriate policy/ procedure, determine and/or recommends the appropriate solution. Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to endure accuracy. Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.
Participates in special projects and performs other related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications: To qualify you must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Life Sciences or a related field with five years of experience managing a research operation in an academic setting. Possess the knowledge and experience in specific areas such as Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and/or Biochemistry/Cell Biology.
Preferred Qualifications: Masters degree in Sciences or related field
