The Manager – Clinical Risk manages the operations of the organization -wide risk management and patient safety programs for Dean Medical Group and provides guidance to clinical staff. The Manager develops and maintains systems within Dean to detect, monitor, prevent, organize, measure, investigate, report, and manage patient adverse events, malpractice claims, incident reports and other indicators of potential patient harm. The organization's key aims in this area are to be on the leading edge of improving health outcomes and service, increasing patient safety, and reducing error in healthcare process. This position will be vital to accomplishing these.
1. Promote the development and implementation of the Dean Medical Group risk management program. Proactively evaluate areas of organizational risk based on internal assessment and external benchmarking and implement strategies and policies that promote patient and staff safety.
2. Promote the occurrence reporting process including trending and reporting of results, identification of problem-prone areas, and facilitation of prevention initiatives.
4. Lead the review of serious occurrences requiring root-cause analysis or failure mode and effects analysis. Disseminate lessons learned and process improvement plans.
5. Collaborate with the Office of Medical Affairs on physician care issues requiring risk management review and coordination of peer review when appropriate.
6. Provide detailed reports on all serious incidents, claims, and risk-related issues.
7. Respond to sentinel events and other serious occurrences and provide expert advice on the management and reporting of such events to administrative and clinical leadership and staff. When necessary to disclose an unexpected outcome or medical error, work with the physician, Corporate General Counsel, Director of Patient Advocacy and, if appropriate, hospital administration to plan and effect disclosure with the patient.
8. Conduct immediate/appropriate response to any serious occurrence/complaint representing actual or potential patient, visitor, or employee injury. Monitor and take subsequent actions to ensure learning, compliance, and documentation.
9. Analyze all statistical reports and advisories that identify risk management and patient safety patterns and trends for leadership.
10. Serve as liaison to external regulatory agencies for purposes of patient and physician reporting, event investigation, and response.
11. Keep up to date with new and revised state and federal regulations and statues related to patient care in an ambulatory setting. Review and evaluate related policies and procedures and recommend revisions as needed. Create new policies, guidelines and protocols for approval, as needed.
12. Actively participate in a variety of committees as assigned, such as Patient Safety and Risk Steering committees.
13. Annually evaluate risk management and patient safety program for improvement opportunities.
14. Collaborate with the members of the Risk and Legal team with projects and tasks as requested.
15. Provide back up to other members of the Risk Management and Legal team as needed.
1. Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Management or related field and five years of health care quality improvement, risk management, or health information experience.
2. Proven program management ability and experience, including a thorough understanding of quality improvement (QI) processes, tools, and techniques; quality measurement and reporting; root cause analysis and preventive risk management strategies; accrediting bodies' standards; and state and federal regulations.
3. Clinical background.
4. High energy, organized, persistent and creative individual with strong communications, interpersonal, and systems thinking skills.
5. Experience with standard Microsoft Office or related products.
6. Ability to function effectively, independently and efficiently in a stressful and dynamic work environment.
1. Master's Degree.
2. Risk Management Certification or in pursuit of designation.
3. Experience in database management and systems development.
4. Knowledge of risk information management systems (RIMS).
