The Department of Neurological Surgery specializes in the management of acute brain and spinal trauma, vascular disease, disorders of the brain, peripheral nerves and spine. We are also co-directing the UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute and house the Sports Health and Safety Institute (SHSI), a new institute created in partnership with the NFL. Our physicians practice at Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, Seattle Children's Hospital, Northwest Hospital, Valley Medical Center, the VA Hospital, and throughout the 5 state WWAMI Region. In addition, the department has one of the premier academic training programs in the world. We have an outstanding research program ranging from spine regeneration to brain computer interfaces and a broad array of clinical trials.
The Department of Neurological Surgery has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3.
Our lab is focused on understanding intratumoral heterogeneity in glioblastoma. We have shown in the past that cells within a tumor have dramatically different gene expression profiles. We use cutting edge techniques for single cell analysis such as single cell RNA-seq to interrogate tumor heterogeneity in primary patient samples that are harvested directly from the operating room. In parallel, we are trying to develop and characterize mouse and human culture models that recapitulate the heterogeneity seen in patient tumors in order to allow us to study how these processes affect treatment resistance and tumor evolution. These models include mouse xenografts, genetic mouse models, and human tissue culture models such as neurospheres and brain organoids.
This is for a position as a research scientist that will direct the day to day operations of the lab with oversight from the principal investigator. This will include overseeing and directing focused experimental work by junior lab members. In addition, this position will serve as a go to' for both experimental advice and general issues/questions in the lab as the lab continues to grow. The position is expected to include at least one major project/direction of research that is independently generated and executed with oversight by the principal investigator of the lab. Persons considering this position should expect to contribute scientifically to the overall direction of the lab but also to perform experimental work and participate actively in writing and editing publications. Experimental work includes basic and complex techniques in molecular biology such as genome editing, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, next generation sequencing library preparation and basic interpretation, flow cytometry, and advanced tissue culture. Work with animal models (mice) is also expected to be a part of the overall lab effort but not necessarily for this specific position.
Doctoral degree in nature sciences (preferably biology, biochemistry, or chemistry)
Three to five years of experience of basic molecular biology techniques and general experimental approaches (PhD level).
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Experience with tissue culture, flow cytometry, next generation library preparation, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and animal models (mice). Experience with writing/reviewing publications.
