MARCOMM SPECIALIST FOR ARTS AND HUMANITIES

The University of Washington's College of Arts and Sciences has a wonderful opportunity for a Marcomm Specialist for Arts and Humanitieswho will support the College of Arts & Sciences Dean's Office and the Office of Advancement (fundraising) and Alumni Relations.
The Marcomm Specialist will provide strategic and tactical marketing and communications support to the academic units within the Arts and Humanities divisions within the College and will support the advancement efforts for both divisions. Under the direction of the Managing Director of Marketing Communications and in close collaboration with the Sr. Director of Advancement for the Arts and Humanities, this position is responsible for creating a comprehensive marketing communications plan to raise awareness about the divisions and their departments that includes coordinating and supporting events, identifying stories of interest from departments within the divisions, highlighting the departmental efforts through social media, updating the College website with content from both divisions and working closely with the divisional Advancement (fundraising) team to support donor engagement and the fundraising campaign. This position also supports the activities of ArtsUW and oversees the ArtsUW website and Spotlight (the e-newsletters for ArtsUW). This position reports to the Managing Director of Marketing Communications.
Duties and Responsibilities
The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest unit on campus and graduates nearly 70% of the alumni of the University. The College's audiences are extremely diverse. It is a very complex system that requires a large amount of collaboration and consensus-building. This position will find the same complexities in the Arts and Humanities divisions within the College. This position requires the ability to interact with broad and diverse personalities.
Working with the Managing Director of Marketing and Communications, this position supports the development of effective and strategic communications strategies and tactics that represent the Arts and Humanities divisions, the College, and the UW at the highest level. This position will interact with and develop materials for a myriad of constituencies including donors, alumni, students, faculty and staff, and the general public. This position will work closely with other marketing communications and advancement professionals across the College and UW to ensure consistent messaging that positions the UW as a leading institution. Duties and responsibilities include:
Under the direction of the Managing Director of Marketing Communications, develop a comprehensive marketing communications plan for the division with the goal of raising awareness of the distinguished faculty, cutting-edge research, performances and exhibitions, and outstanding students to encourage donor support. (45%)
Work closely with the divisional dean(s) and the department chairs to identify stories of interest and key research activities to highlight through the College's various communications outlets.
Work with the Managing Director and the Advancement team members to draft case statements, proposals, and concept papers to support fundraising efforts for key divisional and departmental fundraising priorities. This work will also include coordinating events and creating and distributing event invitations (both print and electronic).
Attend the Arts and Humanities Advancement team meetings as scheduled by the Sr. Director of Advancement for Arts & Humanities.
Be familiar with and take required training for the Advance database (provided by the University) and use information to support research needs and pull lists.
Support the ArtsUW marketing and communications efforts, including scheduling and coordinating the council meetings, taking notes, producing the ArtsUW e-newsletter, providing updates to the ArtsUW website regarding events and content, supporting the social media aspects of ArtsUW, creating the annual marketing plan, creating advertisements and conducting media buys, and coordinating and attending promotional events for the ArtsUW.
Develop and prepare written content as assigned for the College of Arts and Sciences website and the ArtsUW website, including conducting interviews with faculty, guests and students; writing features and news articles; posting material directly to the College's website; updating events listing by working with departments; and monitoring the websites to maintain fresh content.
Provide support pre-, during and post-events created by the College that highlight the divisions' efforts.
Attend the Constituency Relations meetings that are organized through the UW Alumni Association, represent the Arts and Humanities divisions and serve as a liaison to the departments and advancement team to help the divisions be better engaged with alumni by sharing best practices (5%)
Provide outstanding customer service and strategic communications consultation to the College and the Arts and Humanities divisions, departments, centers, and institutes and professionally represent the College and the UW in all interactions. (50%)
Provide general marketing and communications support to the Arts and Humanities divisions, including but not limited to drafting press releases and press alerts, conducting general research on topics or individuals, scheduling meetings, assisting with briefing materials, composing email and hard copy correspondence, organizing files, assisting with media outreach and coverage, developing communications templates, drafting text for invitations, brochures and other print materials.
Work closely with the Managing Director of Marketing Communications to highlight Arts and Humanities stories through social media efforts, includes writing content and posting to the various communications channels.
Work closely with the departments within the divisions to support their e-newsletter efforts, includes preparing the e-blasts for distribution and following University guidelines for the e-blasts.
Provide consultation to departments within assigned divisions on general marketing communications efforts done at the departmental level. Work with the Marketing Communications Specialist for the Social Sciences to organize and oversee quarterly marketing roundtable meetings with the Social Sciences and Humanities Divisions to provide consultations on best practices and highlight great communications work.
Understand audience development and be able to pull appropriate lists from the Advance database to support strategic communications and events efforts.
Other projects as assigned by the Managing Director of Marketing and Communications. (5%)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES From time to time, oversee the efforts of student workers on projects for the Arts and Humanities.
Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing, journalism, English, or related field.
Minimum three years of diverse experience in marketing/communications or public relations as well as event planning. Proven expertise in developing targeted messages and communications for diverse audiences.
Experience working successfully in a collaborative environment.
Must be adept at organizational proficiency and project management, including the ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
Must be able to work in a team environment as well as independently. Must be flexible in a fast-paced setting and able to work under deadline pressure.
Must be customer service-minded in the interaction, strategic planning, and execution or implementation of all projects.
Demonstrated success in building and gaining consensus on creative initiatives and directions within a team environment as well as through open/general outreach efforts.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including expertise in the application of writing and editing skills with strong familiarity with AP Stylebook and Chicago Manual of Style.
Capacity to work professionally with many constituencies (e.g., staff, faculty, students, alumni, friends, vendors, donors and volunteers).
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office for the PC.
Experienced working in the Adobe Creative Suite (includes InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, etc.) and able to do basic HTML coding and work with CSS, and experience working with email distribution systems such as Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, etc.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Familiarity with technology, new media tools and a wide range of software including Final Cut Pro, Dreamweaver.
Experience with higher education institutions and/or marketing in a complex organizational environment.
Experience working with large databases such as ADVANCE.
Familiarity using content management systems such as Drupal and Word Press.
Experience in photography and/or videography.
