The Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) is a $70M health research institute based at the University of Washington, with integrated partnerships with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children's Hospital, and more than 20 other organizations engaged in health research in five states in the Pacific Northwest region. The mission of ITHS is to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries to the clinic and beyond to improve the health of people in our region today. We develop critical resources to help innovators move their discoveries forward. ITHS fosters innovative health research, sustains research resources, and provides education and career development programs.
The ITHS provides collaborative research networks for participating researchers through multi-institutional structures and solutions. ITHS houses clinical research facilities, technology cores and scientific services, and partners broadly to serve a broad population of investigators. The ITHS provides educational programs and training to strengthen career development among faculty and postdoctoral researchers in clinical and translational research. This position reports to the Director of Education and will assist in the development and coordination of engaging, relevant, and innovative educational materials, courses, and content.
The ITHS is seeking an Instructional Designer who can apply evidence-based instructional design theories, practice and methods to create engaging learning activities and compelling course content by working with subject matter experts and identifying target audience's training needs.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
With direction from the Director of Education, develop and support the creation of training materials, promotional materials, teaching aids, such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials and reference works to better facilitate faculty in adopting new learning technologies and pedagogical innovations for quality online course development and delivery.
Provide faculty development offerings which foster adoption of effective practices for course design and teaching.
Create and design documents that describe the program needs, audience needs, high level tasks, delivery content, supporting materials, copyright and evaluations/ assessments.
Coordinate online and in-person learning related events and training workshop, which includes but not limited to event planning, scheduling, promotion, delivery, tweeting/blogging, recording, media archiving, etc.
Represent ITHS as a member of the Education team both internally and externally.
Interface with students, faculty, staff, patients and community concerning ITHS resources, activities and collaboration possibilities.
PROGRAM & COURSE DESIGN AND FACULTY CONSULTATION
In collaboration with subject matter experts, identify and determine needs of the course and appropriate method of delivery based on what the students or end-users need to learn.
Identify and plan appropriate instructional curriculum, learning activities, and assessment materials based on analysis of tasks, learners, and subject matter experts to engage and educate the target audience on specific topics, ensuring the content matches the objectives.
Provide instructional design consultation, guidance and support to faculty subject matter experts in the design and development of academically effective, media-rich distance and hybrid programs, courses, modules and any other course materials (e.g. integration of videos, discussion boards, rubrics, quizzes, exercises, scripts, storyboards, simulations, games and web- based training) for undergraduate, graduate, continuing education, and open online course (i.e. MOOC) learners.
Facilitate the use of effective instructional approaches in the design and development of distance, hybrid and flipped courses.
Collaborate with faculty to ensure learning objectives are met and pedagogical approaches are considered.
Support faculty in the integration of emerging technologies to facilitate engaging teaching practices and student learning experiences.
Provide instructional design guidance and support to faculty to include responding to requests for assistance, troubleshooting, designing program templates, facilitating training, group workshops, learning discussions and maintaining the integrity of courses.
Work closely with faculty to create the course development plan, project milestones, and the production timeline.
Work with the Director of Education to design the overall course blueprint and learning components, including but not limited to course content, formative and summative assessments, peer reviews, and online learning activities.
Apply research-based learning theories, proven instructional design principles, online learning models, and the best practice guidelines into the course development process.
Under the direction of the Director of Education, mentor faculty to design and produce learning objects in a variety of formats including but not limited to print, graphics, audio, video, animation, e- Learning interactive modules, etc.
Collaborate with the media team to support faculty video production needs, which includes but not limited to studio media production, pre-recorded lectures, live event recording, synchronous webinar recording, and video post- production.
Facilitate faculty to develop or redesign the course syllabus, the course schedule/timeline, and course navigation to support quality course delivery and enhance student's learning experience.
MANAGE DAILY OPERATIONS AND ADMINISTRATION
Oversee project management for courses from inception to completion, and communicate progress to the Director of Education. This also includes planning for potential concerns and preparing work-arounds to meet deadlines.
Conduct quality assurance reviews on courses and identify and follow up on required revisions.
Assist in monitoring the review of courses for standards, consistency, and quality.
Ensure university-wide awareness of, and compliance with, federal and state distance learning regulations, as well as licensing and copyright laws.
Participate in the development and administration of applicable policies, processes and procedures, strategic plans, goals and programmatic activities pertaining to online and hybrid learning at the ITHS.
Develop, deploy and monitor status/progress report/project time log and present metrics data on a regular basis (e.g. weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.).
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Education, Public Administration, Business Management, Information Systems or Related Field and 4 years of experience in instructional design, teaching/learning or closely related field, preferably in a higher education institution.
Demonstrated knowledge of learning and instructional design pedagogy, theories, instructional systems, and learning technologies.
Experience in partnering with university faculty to design, build and evaluate hybrid/online courses using appropriate research-based instructional techniques and technologies.
Familiar with the use of Learning Management Systems from an instructor's perspective, such as Canvas.
Experience with the use of instructional technologies such as web conferencing, video development, anti-plagiarism software, lecture capture, web page editors, graphic software, mobile learning and copyright.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong project management, needs assessment, time management, organization, ability to multi-task, work independently, networking, strong interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and work a flexible schedule with some evening and/or weekend work. Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, evolving environment.
Experience using computer programs such as MS Office Word, Access, Excel, Power Point. Must be comfortable with data and have an intermediate level proficiency with computer technology.
Ability to learn new eLearning & instructional technologies quickly.
Ability to facilitate collaboration, support, and buy-in from a variety of stakeholders.
Master's degree in instructional design, curriculum design, instructional technology, educational technology or related field desired but not required.
Proven understanding of tools for teaching, including emerging technologies.
Ability to stay abreast of the changing educational technology landscape.
Teaching experience is a plus.
Familiar with the Quality Matters rubrics and its peer review model.
Familiar with professional AV, web and multimedia development production.
Familiar with the usability and accessibility guidelines and best practices in instructional design.
Knowledgeable and experienced with appropriate hardware and software used in the creation of digital media including but not limited to MS Office Suite plus Project and Camtasia, Adobe Creative Suite, Visio, Adobe Captivate, Photoshop, web page authoring and social media platforms.
