This SWING SHIFT position will be located on a rotating basis between Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center.
The Department of Pathology operates two hospital based anatomic pathology laboratories, a cytology laboratory, and several small specialty laboratories providing both inpatient and outpatient services. The faculty are nationally renowned and sought out for their specialty clinical consultation services. The Anatomic Pathology laboratories are intricate to the teaching of medical students and residents. In addition to medical student teaching, the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offer a joint residency program, leading to Board certification in Anatomic and Clinical pathology, as well as several sub-specialty areas of pathology.
The Department of Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (100%) PATHOLOGIST' ASSISTANT.
This position will be under the direct supervision of a board certified anatomical pathologist. The Department of Pathology is an internationally renowned department, with strong teaching and research programs and clinical service activities.

Perform gross examination of surgical and biopsy specimens to include dictation, complete dissection, selection and submission of tissue sections for microscopic examination
Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling, photograph pertinent specimens, and perform frozen section procedures during intraoperative consultations
Assist in the training of surgical pathology techniques and procedures to pathology residents, fellows, and medical students
Select appropriate ancillary testing and performs specialized procedures as requested
Resolve technical problems related to specimen collection and receipt.
Assist in quality management projects and ensures compliance with all applicable laboratory regulatory requirements to include (but not limited to) CLIA, CAP, and JCAHO
Oversee maintenance of equipment and supplies and maintains a clean save work environment
Contribute to standardization and coordination of activities between HMC & UWMC Surgical Pathology areas. Interacts with physician and staff and acts as a liaison between the department and other ancillary services
BS or MS degree and completion of a Pathologists' Assistant NAACLS accredited training program and certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Pathologist Assistant, PA(ASCP)or equivalent accrediting approved by the department.
Minimum 2 years experience as a pathologist assistant in a academic medical center handling complex surgical pathology specimens. Excellent communication skills, proficiency in computer LIS systems, and ability to work independently.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Candidate must be able to work at UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center on an as needed basis as directed by Supervisor. Free transportation is available between sites during working hours via the Health Sciences Express shuttle.
