The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is seeking a creative and motivated individual to intern in its Prevention Advocacy Department. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience while working at an active, upbeat non-profit.
The Prevention Advocacy Intern will work directly with the program team on a wide range of projects related to PrEP awareness and uptake in Chicago, including trainings, community mobilization and social marketing. The Prevention Advocacy intern will also have the opportunity to learn about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy, and other issues related to AFC’s mission.
This person will work closely with the Director of Prevention Advocacy and Gay Men’s Health and a number of other staff at AFC, and will engage in significant community work with AFC’s many partners and allies. Must be comfortable working with people of color and LGBTQ communities.
This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills acquired in the educational setting and apply them in a professional setting. The intern will gain a better understanding of the role that PrEP for HIV prevention plays in the Chicago epidemic, and be better prepared to work in the field of HIV/AIDS, public health, communications, and public policy.
The Prevention Advocacy Intern will learn:
What PrEP is, how it works, and why it’s important;
How PrEP is being deployed in Chicago, including opportunities and challenges;
How to mobilize vulnerable communities to improve PrEP awareness.
Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in HIV prevention;
Able to work independently, and to also work in a collaborative environment;
Interest in learning about PrEP and HIV prevention;
Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
Enjoy working with the public in community settings;
Must be flexible, outgoing, and open to new opportunities to engage with a variety of stakeholders and communities.
This internship is unpaid (stipend available), however, AFC can help interns obtain college credit where available. The intern will receive necessary training and staff supervision. AFC requires interns to participate for a minimum of 15 hours/week for a minimum of 8 weeks, though longer internships are preferred. Public Health majors are encouraged to apply. Anyone can become infected with HIV, but HIV and related chronic diseases disproportionately impact certain populations in distinct geographic areas. We can have the greatest impact on the HIV epidemic by focusing our efforts on those most-impacted by HIV, based on epidemiological data and unmet need:
• Young Black gay and bisexual men
• Transgender women of color
• Black women living in high-incidence areas
• Latino gay and bisexual men
Factors that drive the HIV epidemic and health inequities that we will address include:
• Sex work
• Drug use
• Lack of access to health care
• Immigration status
