UT Health San Antonio places great importance on international experiences, particularly those that provide value added educational and training opportunities for its students and clinical residents/fellows. The Education Abroad Coordinator will work under the general supervision of the Director of International Services to provide students, residents, faculty, and staff at UT Health San Antonio with the resources and information needed to prepare effectively for education abroad experiences and University-sponsored international travel. This position coordinates aspects of the education abroad process for students and residents, including outreach, advising, orientation, and assessment; develops and communicate materials regarding education abroad opportunities and institutional requirements for international travel; Monitors emergencies and potential risks in locations where the University has students, residents, staff and faculty, and assists with a response in the event of a crisis abroad; Actively participates in professional development regarding updates in education abroad and international travel risk mitigation.

Education Abroad Program Advising:
Facilitates the intake process for all students and residents/fellows participating in an education abroad program, including maintaining and updating checklists and required documentation. Assists schools and departments with education abroad proposals, program budgets, and travel coordination, as needed. Acts as liaison with administrative and student service units on issues related to education abroad programs, including, but not limited to, the Registrar’s, Veteran Services and Financial Aid, Title IX, Student Life, ADA Compliance, Student Health and Wellness Center, Counseling Services, Undergraduate Medical Education, and Graduate Medical Education. Develops contacts and maintains relationships with overseas partner institutions, affiliate providers, and other program sponsors. Develops and conducts pre-departure orientations on health, safety, and cultural awareness, as well as re-entry workshops. Participates in program evaluation, data collection, and data reporting.
International Travel Safety and Risk Management:
Verifies, tracks and supports student, resident, faculty, and staff participation in travel assistance programs and travel registry system. Assists with development of an emergency response protocol and crisis response team for global incidents. Assists faculty sponsors/program leads with the development of emergency action plans for education abroad programs. Monitors world events, health and safety information, and security alerts and communicate potential impact on education abroad programs and University travelers to crisis response team and International Oversight Committee.
Communication and Promotion:
Develops and updates content related to education abroad and University-sponsored international travel on OIS website and intranet. Maintains and updates institutional education abroad policy, and communicate policy and procedures to campus community. Communicates UT system international travel policy and international travel to a high-risk area waiver request process to campus community. Articulates goals and benefits of international education to campus constituents, including the development of informational and promotional materials. Assists the OIS team with the design and execution of programs and events that promote and support international education, cultural exchange, and cultural adjustment, including Fulbright scholarship opportunities and International Education Week activities.
Initiates and maintains a repository of existent international memorandum of understanding (MOU’s) to provide University faculty and staff with access to and information regarding international collaborations. Provides assistance with the coordination of visits for incoming international students and scholars as a part of University exchange programs or agreements.
This position supports International Services Representatives during peak seasons, including processing immigration applications for international medical students in B-1 status, F-1 international students, and J-1 exchange visitors, as needed. Provides support and facilitates special projects as assigned by the Director of International Services. Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree with two (2) years of related experience in student advising, education abroad, international student affairs, risk management or similar work areas.
Master’s degree in International Education, Higher Education Administration, or related field. Experience spent studying, working or living abroad. Excellent presentation and customer service skills. Proven ability to work with people from different cultures. Ability to communicate in at least one language in addition to English. Demonstrated experience building and fostering strong relationships at various organizational levels. Experience in a university education abroad or international risk management office, or study abroad program provider preferred. Active membership in the Forum on Education Abroad and/or NAFSA: Association for International Educators.
