UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW's IT infrastructure, resources, and services. Operations Management within UW-IT, oversees the network operations center, network implementation, and core networking teams. This unit provides 7x24x365 support for the University, UW Medicine, Pacific Northwest Gigapop, and the state K-20 Education network. Additionally, this unit activates network/phone ports, installs switches/wireless access points/routers, and monitors and maintains functionality to over 15,000 devices 7x24x365.
UW-IT has an outstanding opportunity for a Network Engineer.
This position exists to provide network support for the UW campus, branch campuses, Medical Centers, K20, and the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNW-GP). The Network Engineer is responsible for complex installation and maintenance activities relating to all telecommunications network services for UW voice, data, and video, including data installation. This position will provide support for infrastructure design and coordination of facilities issues with UW departments, UW Medicine locations, non-UW contractors, and other organizations.
The Network Engineer position requires having a complete understanding of layer2 networking, from network design and implementation to troubleshooting complex wired Ethernet networks. Must demonstrate an understanding of interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for LAN hardware to include L3 routers, L2 switches, hubs, and wireless access points in order to support the UW network. Further, this position will assist in the evaluation and testing of new voice/data technologies.
Additionally, must have basic knowledge to set up and troubleshoot 802.11b, a, g and n wireless networks and supporting hardware, wireless spectrum analysis equipment, network sniffers, and TCP/IP protocol. Wireless site survey, access points, networking setup and troubleshooting skills are essential.
This position is expected to lead projects and train staff and must be able to lead, organize, train, and effectively influence other technical staff. This position will be the primary liaison for tools creation and support. Must maintain relationships with all vendors and evaluate firmware releases and conduct bug investigations.
BA degree in Computer Science or Engineering or related field or equivalent experience
Three years of experience in layer 2 network implementation, or operations
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Demonstrated expertise in contemporary network technology including knowledge of:
Thoroughly proficient with Ethernet-TCP/IP concepts.
Familiarity with fiber optic cable, layer 2 switching, to include vlanning.
Experience with firmware evaluation and bug investigation.
Demonstrated understanding of interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for LAN hardware including L3 routers, L2 switches, hubs, and wireless access points. This includes familiarity with network-level protocols such as snmp, dhcp, as well as complex configurations involving vlans.
Experience with highly disciplined debug methodology, including paying close attention to detail, maintaining detailed configuration and testing documentation.
Experience evaluating technologies and dealing with vendors.
Experience with JUNOS.
Experience with VoIP networks.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Demonstrated project management skills.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds overhead, this may include lifting above the head. Must use proper lifting techniques.
Must be able to work in confined spaces such as ceilings or raised floors.
Must be willing to (partially) work in the University Medical Centers and meet minimum qualifications for working at such centers.
Must be able to operate a state vehicle on a daily basis, which requires a valid driver's license recognized by the State of Washington. It may, on occasion be necessary to travel on weekend and up to one week at a time in the performance of assigned duties.
Must be willing to be on-call and work off-hours in the event of an emergency or planned work
