Measurements Systems engineer is a technically diverse and challenging role that supports the glassmaking process for optical fiber manufacturing. The primary mission is to apply technical knowledge to advance manufacturing capabilities. Project assignments require a broad application of engineering skills with a specific focus on measurements and machine vision. Primary objectives include process improvement, cost reduction, process and raw material optimization, engineered safety improvements, and ensuring manufacturing readiness for new processes. Comprehensive process understanding is an expectation and requirement for success.
This position is part of the Division Engineering organization within Corning Optical Fiber and Cable (OFC).
The position is based in Wilmington, NC and will require travel to other Corning Optical Fiber facilities, primarily Concord, NC.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
Apply fundamental measurement engineering concepts to drive capability advancements in glass manufacturing process through advanced measurement techniques to include non-contact and optical methods.
Lead cost reduction and process improvement projects that have division-wide impact.
Work between technology and plant manufacturing organizations to ensure smooth deployment of new technologies, products, and processes by identifying and and/or leading implementation of required capabilities.
Collaborate with global manufacturing sites to coordinate and solve glassmaking-related technical issues with a focus on measurements
Support and improve existing machine vision based non-contact measurement systems
15-20% in North America.
International travel may also be required depending on job assignment.
Hours of work:
Typically 40+ hours per week. M-F but may require weekends depending on travel schedules or job assignment.
Required Education And Experience:
B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics Engineering, Physics, ECE, Optics
Focus on machine vision, measurements concepts, and software development is highly desirable
0-5 Years Engineering Experience
Elevated technical curiosity with an emphasis on Measurements, Mechanics, Optics and Electronics.
Mastery of fundamental engineering concepts with demonstrated ability to apply to manufacturing problems.
Software development skills with a preferential grasp of C#.Net (or VB.Net) and some form of controls programming, LabView, Halcon or Matlab a plus.
Able to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment that, on occasion, requires support outside typical work schedule to complete assignments.
Able to work in a team based environment and lead or participate on a highly matrixed team. • Possesses sound problem solving and decision making skills.
Highly motivated and focused on delivering results.
Knowledge of statistical concepts and application/use for evaluating solutions
Strong data analysis skills, including ability to query databases (Access) and analyze in Excel, Minitab, JMP, etc. Fundamental understanding of database structure and design is desirable and beneficial, specifically vertical table structures and relational databases
Able to collaborate with varied levels and functions within the organization, including manufacturing, technology, R&D, operations, procurement, IT, and supply chain.
Prior experience moving a new product or process from development into manufacturing.
Able to apply innovative engineering skills in a technical environment to solve challenging problems.

Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
