The Director of Advising provides leadership to a team that plans and implements advising services that holistically address students' academic, career, and social-emotional learning needs to facilitate successful matriculation in the College. In collaboration with academic deans, faculty and other student affairs departments, the Director will develop and implement strategic initiatives related to advising, retention, and overall student success. The Director works collaboratively with a wide range of offices campus wide, recommending and developing programs, policies, and procedures that affect students' engagement, retention, and completion. The Director will work with the Dean of Students and various academic deans to ensure that the strategic initiatives of the College are being successfully implemented. The Director will also provide direct advising support to students when necessary. Master's Degree in education, psychology, counseling, management, student affairs or related field;
3 years' progressive leadership and supervisory experience;
3 years' higher education experience;
Experience with staff management and supervision including hiring, work assignments, professional development, performance evaluations, & coaching;
Direct experience with advising and retention initiatives;
Experience making data-informed decisions regarding student success;
Demonstrated commitment and experience working effectively with culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse students, faculty/staff, communities and/or organizations.
Project management skills sufficient to manage multiple projects simultaneously, create clear and attainable project objectives, build project requirements, oversee the cost, time and scope of projects, manage project constraints, and communicate progress and end results;
Ability to lead, motivate, change systems, solve problems, improve service, resolve conflicts, and work collaboratively;
Effective written and verbal communication skills sufficient to participate in discussions and communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.
5 years' progressive leadership and supervisory experience;
5 years' higher education experience, specifically working in an urban community college;
Strategic planning experience;
Supervisory/management experience in a union setting, dealing with multiple collective bargaining agreements;
Knowledge of intrusive advising;
Experience working with Customer Relationship Management system (CRM);
Quality improvement training/experience;
Ability to use MS Word and Excel, and other software applications to prepare, create, format, edit, print, save and/or attach a variety of documents, including emails, memos, reports, letters, presentations, spreadsheets, tables, charts, graphs, in an efficient and timely manner.
