UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW's IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and research operations around the world. UW-IT partners with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service.
Networks, Data Centers & Telecommunications ("NDT") within UW-IT, consolidates network architecture, engineering, operations, and support teams whose responsibilities span not only UW, but the state K-20 Education Network, the Pacific Northwest Gigapop, and other national and international research and education networks. It provides technology evaluation and solutions for voice and data networks (wired and wireless), service directions, architecture, design, and optical and Ethernet solutions for long-haul and local networks. This unit is structured to provide system design and support for all aspects of our research university environment.
UW-IT has an outstanding opportunity for a Network Engineer.
A Network Engineer is expected to be a network professional with experience in complex data and telecommunications systems design, development, management, and evaluation. Domain expertise ranges from Radio Frequency, WLAN, Layer 2/3, WLAN controller design, implementation, protocols and architecture.
Bachelors degree in Communication Engineer, Computer Science, or related field.
Four years experience in network engineering, implementation, or operations including the following:
A highly disciplined troubleshooting methodology, paying close attention to detail, maintaining detailed configuration and testing documentation, with good verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with highly disciplined debug methodology, including paying close attention to detail, maintaining detailed configuration and testing documentation.
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
Experience must include design, deployment, and support of a large WLAN infrastructure, testing wireless products including access points and client devices for evaluation, documentation, integration, customer support documentation, and product development. Experience with the above in a complex hospital or healthcare environment is a plus.
Experience should also include other areas critical to a large-scale wireless environment, including experience with technologies such AAA, IP mobility (Moble IP), wireless management sysems, IP network security, VLANs, and necessary standards.
Excellent understanding of interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for WAN/LAN hardware to include routers, controllers, LAN switches, wireless access points.
Experience with ArubaOS software and associated Aruba WLAN infrastructure.
Experience evaluating technologies and dealing with vendors.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Intermediate/Advanced experience using the Aruba Airwave management application.
Intermediate/Advanced experience using the Aruba ClearPass access management system.
Working within a hospital or healthcare environment a plus.
Extensive experience with the Juniper Networks Operating System (JUNOS).
Experience with VoIP networks.
Demonstrated project management skills.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
Must be able to respond to network outages, scheduled installations, and maintenance activities during off-hours.
Must be willing to travel up to one week.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds overhead, this may include lifting above the head. Must use proper lifting techniques.
Must be able to climb a ladder.
Must be able to operate a state vehicle on a daily basis, which requires a valid driver's license recognized by the State of Washington. It may, on occasion be necessary to travel on weekend and up to one week at a time in the performance of assigned duties.
Must be willing to (partially) work in the University Medical Centers and meet minimum qualifications for working at such centers.
This is an essential position and is required to report to work remotely when UW suspends operations.
Must be willing to be on-call and work off-hours in the event of an emergency or when the work is planned or requested by the customer or supervisor.
