The Department of Immunology has grown to include 33 faculty, ~30 graduate students and more than 70 post-doctoral trainees. We are a strongly interactive group and share the view that the immune system provides an unparalleled platform from which to study processes common to all of mammalian biology, processes unique to host defense, and processes of clear and immediate importance to the understanding and amelioration of human disease.
The Department of Immunology currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST ENGINEER 3.
The RS3 will work within a team of bioinformatics scientists performing analysis on large omics data sets with a focus on infectious diseases, innate immunity and effects of intervention on disease outcome. He/she must be capable of working independently and as a team on assigned tasks/projects to support a large, fast-paced research lab.
Manages research projects of moderate size and scope; makes substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals and objectives. The RS3 works independently with no oversight required and reports significant issues as necessary. Develops new research methods and approaches; contributes toward development of strategies and identifies methodological problems, makes substantial contributions to the scientific findings and implements appropriate procedural modifications.
This individual would possess data analysis and interpretation skills, exceptional communication and collaboration skills and a strong scientific curiosity. Candidate must be informed on emerging Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) algorithms and bioinformatics approaches. He/She should have proven experience in the genomics data sciences, sequencing, statistical analysis, data exploration, machine learning; and must possess a background in the biological sciences (immunology preferred). This individual must be able to work in R and must provide for review publishable analysis (R markdowns from previous work) during the job interview process.
Typical duties and responsibilities:
Manages, creates, monitors and implements effective plans for the the computational analysis of RNA-sequencing, ChIP-seq, rRNA16S-seq, and single cell sequencing data. This analyses will include quality control of raw data, differential expression analysis, functional analysis, correlation analysis, and statistical modeling to integrate multiple data types.
Manages, creates, monitors and implements effective plans for the the integration of data sets from multiple data types and platforms (public and private) to identify key gene signatures and pathways.
Writes and maintains computer scripts necessary to complete the analyses described above.
Applies published computational approaches to generate novel findings.
Develops or maintains, serves as lead on current sequencing and data analysis pipelines.
Contributes to manuscripts, posters, and grant applications. Present research results at laboratory meetings.
Develops technical proposals and makes presentations at national and international conferences and research meetings.
Understands broad strategic objectives and contributes to them; nurtures and maintains relationships with investigators of external research to identify and develop new funding sources; identifies grant/project extensions such as supplemental funding, needs for no-cost extension of a project and/or fellowships.
Contributes materials for grant submissions.
May initiate new project concepts and seek funding.
Interacts corroboratively with research team.
Successfully manages multiple projects and tasks associated with the Gale lab research.
Provides ideas to improve organizational efficiency of the research group; identifies and evaluates recruits for open positions; mentors junior staff in development of technical, project and business development skills; monitors the work of others and redirects efforts to achieve task/project objectives or enhance quality.
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences
3+ years of experience in computational data analysis
Strong command line experience in Linux and R.
Data processing is primarily done in Linux so command line experience is necessary.
Most statistical analysis would be conducted in the R language and presented as either R markdowns or Shiny applications.
6+ years of experience in computational data analysis is preferred.
Background in virology or immunology is a plus.
