The school seeks a team-oriented, knowledgeable, and innovative individual to fulfill the role of Learning Specialist in the upper elementary school grades (3-5). In keeping with the mission of the school, a successful candidate will foster a safe learning environment that promotes respect, equity, and cultural competency. The school hopes to fill the position as early as January 15, 2018 but no later than August 2018.
The Learning Specialist will provide classroom and instructional support to meet the needs of students with learning differences in a general education setting. The Learning Specialist will report to the Director of Learning Services, monitor student progress, and play an essential role in communicating needs, services, and accommodations to faculty, parents/guardians, and administration.
MA in special education (completed or in process) and a developing expertise in working with students with learning differences
Practicum training in a systematic, multi-sensory based approach to reading instruction, as approved by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA)
A commitment to supporting the mission of the school
Knowledge of implementing Universal Design for Learning principles to enrich students’ learning to its fullest potential
An understanding of neurodiversity and the ability to interpret neuropsychological evaluations
Strong oral and written communication skills
Skill in implementing evidence-based strategies that support students with learning differences, as well as executive functioning and sensory needs
The ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues
Provides direct student support through small group and one-to-one instruction within the general education classroom
Collaborates with teachers to implement Universal Design for Learning whole group practices and small group interventions
Collaborates with the Director of Learning Services, the Director of Primary School, and members of the Student Support Team to support students with and without documented learning differences
Works with the Director of Learning Services to write, implement, and maintain Student Learning Profiles and serves as a liaison to external service providers
Provides consultation and cooperates with teachers to implement the strategies and accommodations listed in the Student Learning Profiles
Leads professional development for grade level teams and the school on strategies that assist students with learning differences, sensory needs, or behavioral needs
Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Learning Services and/or Head of School
