Posting Summary: The Mountain Lake Biological Station, which is located in Pembroke, Virginia, just a half hour drive from Blacksburg, Virginia, is accepting applications for a full-time, seasonal Assistant to the Station Manager beginning May 2017 through August 2017. The Assistant to the Station Manager provides administrative, financial, and general operational support for the Station Manager, faculty, researchers, students, and staff residents. The incumbent also serves as a main point of contact for business operations at Mountain Lake for the MLBS Fiscal Administrator located offsite.
Duties include providing clerical support; answering telephones; assisting visitors and station residents; making copies; taking inventory; receiving payments; making deposits; assisting with recycling, cleaning, and waste removal duties; moving station equipment and furniture; maintaining trails; assisting researchers and students as needed; and helping maintain the shop, stockroom, library, computer lab, laboratories, and other common-use spaces.
Required Minimum Level of Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
Required Specific Degree/Training: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Required Minimum Level of Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Required Specific Experience: At least 1 month of experience working in an office environment is required. Additional education may substitute for experience.
Preferred Minimum Level of Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Preferred Specific Experience: Bookkeeping experience and experience handling cash and credit cards is preferred.
Preferred License or Certification: A valid driver's license is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of general office protocols is required. General administrative skills such as answering telephones, greeting visitors, and copying.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of bookkeeping and processing payments is preferred. Skill with basic shop tools is preferred. Ability to assist with physically demanding tasks is preferred.
Required Computer Applications: Experience with MS Word, Excel, and data entry is required.
