School/Unit: VCU Libraries
Department: University Libraries
Purpose of Position:
This position will guide the investment of the VCU Libraries budget allocation for the acquisition of books, journals, data sources, and other library materials that are indispensable to successful research and scholarship, teaching and learning, and clinical practice. In addition, this position oversees staff and procedures which ensure the VCU communities – faculty, students, staff – can find and use these materials. Finally, the position will direct financial operations for the responsible stewardship of all funds expended by the VCU Libraries to enable teaching, acquisition of collections, and leadership work on core challenges facing the VCU academic community.
Reporting to the University Librarian as part of the VCU Libraries' senior administrative team, the Associate University Librarian for Collections, Discovery, and Budget advances and develops the library system's work in acquiring, processing, and accessioning library collections, and oversees the general financial operations of the VCU Libraries. Provides strategic vision and overall management for developing and extending library collections, and pursues exemplary, data- and assessment-informed stewardship of library collections funds, which exceeds $12 million annually. The AUL directly manages the departments of Collections Analysis and Investment, Metadata and Discovery, Licensing and Acquisitions, Budget and Assessment (including the VCU Libraries chief financial officer), and preservation operations managed by the Preservation Officer. The AUL will work with colleagues to develop an overall collections-building strategy that extends current initiatives focused on building specific collections of distinction while also meeting the needs of diverse communities of scholars, students, and others that comprise a large research university. The unique design of this position offers special opportunities and synergies by bringing together management of the VCU Libraries' collections budget, comprising the largest allocation of the library system's financial assets, with oversight of its other financial operations and obligations.
Serving as a resource for the library system, the university, and the state of Virginia, the AUL will develop partnerships and collaborations that advance efficiencies, strengthen the impact of collections investments, and open new avenues to building collections and helping scholars explore the scholarly record held by or provided access by VCU Libraries. In partnership with five colleagues comprising the senior leadership team, the AUL embraces a prominent role in overall strategic planning, governance, leadership, management, budgeting, and development for the entire VCU Libraries system. The AUL will foster and stimulate innovation and creativity among staff, advancing the state of practice for collections and discovery nationally. The AUL is expected to be active professionally and to represent the VCU Libraries through participation in local, regional, and national cooperative, outreach, and professional activities.
