Advertised Summary Job Description: The new Precision Genomics Laboratory (PGL) at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) has an opening for a dynamic and dedicated individual with molecular biology expertise to work in a fast-paced, clinical environment. The laboratory has a strong focus in constitutional diagnostics to support personalized medicine initiatives. The selected candidate will routinely perform a wide range of clinical molecular diagnostic tests including, but not restricted to next generation sequencing (NGS). All clinical work in the laboratory is conducted in accordance with strict regulatory agency requirements in order to provide results of the highest level of quality to physicians and their patients. In addition to clinical service, the position includes participation in new assay development and test validation.
Duties will include:
Under the supervision of a Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Coordinator independently performs specific technical procedures on clinical specimens by manual and automated methods following established procedures after training and competency requirements have been successfully met. Supervisory review of all testing shall be performed and documented prior to final reporting of results of these technical procedures.
Perform nucleic acid extraction, amplification, sequencing and other technical tasks as needed. Compile, analyze and document procedures performed.
Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot complex equipment. Follow-up and troubleshoot unexpected data, investigate non-conformity and notify supervisor/manager of instrument malfunctions or unexpected data.
Maintain accurate and extensive documentation in accordance with internal and external regulatory agencies.
Maintain inventory, request orders as needed and verify receipt and storage.
Assist in the development and validation of clinical assays and generate the corresponding documentation of recommendations and findings.
Provide technical guidance and instruction to students, and new personnel, as assigned.
Attend continuing education, safety and compliance training as necessary.
Maintain continuous and accurate communication with supervisor/manager on all pending and current issues.
Follow all policies and procedures as detailed in PGL SOPMs.
Adhere to the laboratory's QA and QC policies .
The incumbent will also perform other duties as assigned and as needed by the laboratory including but not limited to: sample receipt, sample accessioning and sample storage.
Should be able to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels, and should be organized, dedicated, and be driven by a desire to provide high quality patient care.
Weekend hours may occasionally be necessary.
General Minimum Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree in science plus three years of related experience or equivalent in education,training and experience.
Must be Licensed or License eligible to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist according to New York State licensure requirements. Continued employment will require obtaining a limited permit or a license within 3 months.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Two years related experience in a clinical molecular diagnostic laboratory is required.
Must work well in a group environment.
Requires strong communication skills, both written and oral.
Preferred Qualifications: - Should be able to perform efficiently as well as multi- task in a fast-paced environment and meet strict deadlines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and similar software programs.
- Experience with DNA sequencing and analysis.
- Master's degree in biology/ related field or a Bachelor's degree in biology/ related field plus 4 years of related experience.
