Purpose of Position
The Instructional Designer will provide vision, leadership, and coordination in designing, developing, and delivering fully online courses and technology-enhanced instructional materials for graduate programs delivered by AAP. The Instructional Designer will maintain AAP standards of excellence in course development and delivery, and act as a project lead in various assigned special projects necessary for the maintenance and development of online courses.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Project Lead for New Development Courses
Contact and consult with faculty members
Convey expectations of course standards
Collaborate with new development instructors
Edit materials and respond in a timely manner
Troubleshoot and problem solve issues
Motivate faculty members
Prioritize time and have clear boundaries
Collaborate with supervisor on problems
Keep PDs updated on a regular basis
Ensure that courses are designed with accessibility in mind
Evaluate the instructional effectiveness of ID processes
Design, develop, and plan ID workshops
Course Design and Associated Processes
Monitor and stay abreast of new and emerging technologies
Study and evaluate instructional design theories for application to a variety of program and department needs
Read and stay abreast of JHU and peer institutional best practices and evaluate them for potential application for instructional opportunities at AAP
Special Project Lead
In coordination with accommodation requests (ADA and Section 508), proactively finds solutions to course deficiencies, makes strategic recommendations, and implements any changes necessary to assist faculty members
Represents the IRC at JHU technology meetings and functions
Develop and analyze data to provide regular reports on courses, faculty, and student needs
Assist with course readiness during peak times at semester start-up
Bachelor's degree in a related field required. Three years of related experience required.
A Masters degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or other related discipline is preferred. Experience should be demonstrated by 3-5 years experience in the field of higher education at a professional level in the areas of instructional design, instructional technology, or a closely related field is highly preferred. Two to three years of online teaching experience at the higher education level is preferred. It is helpful to have experience and certification in professional course evaluation. Experience developing non-credit and hybrid courses is also preferred.
Knowledge and Skill:
Must be able to demonstrate in-depth understanding of best practices and androgogical issues related to online teaching and learning
Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply Instructional Design models/principles (ADDIE; Dick and Carey; etc) to an online environment.
Knowledge of various classroom assessment techniques and methods.
Knowledge of and the ability to apply Section 508, UDL, and accessibility standards for online learning environments, as well as familiarity with assistive technologies used with online course production and delivery
Familiarity with copyright laws and creative commons and how they pertain to online courses.
Experience with Quality Matters, Applying the QM Rubric certificate preferred.
Knowledge of cognitive theories of learning and motivation theories, (e.g. ARCS)
Must have an interest in evaluating and suggesting current and emerging technologies in order to enhance course design and delivery.
Requires demonstrated ability to train one-on-one and in a group setting in a collaborative and professional way using multiple modalities
Proficiency with multimedia and word processing skills on both PC and Mac platforms
Familiarity with graphic design, audio, and video elements and software as they pertain to online course design and delivery are necessary
Requires skilled use of course management tools such as Blackboard, Sakai, Moodle, etc. Blackboard preferred.
Familiarity with file compression methods, file types, and formats
Should be skilled in use of conferencing software (Adobe Connect, GoToMeeting, etc.). Adobe Connect preferred.
Working knowledge and a high skill level in use of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, basic HTML editing software, and basic image manipulation software.
Knowledge of database software or relational database theory (FileMaker Pro preferred)
Familiarity with social media tools and their relevance in an online course.
Demonstrated project management and effort tracking skills
Ability to monitor and report out on course development process.
Ability to analyze data and communicate trends and issues.
Must be service oriented and possess the ability to build collaborative relationships
Ability to work independently to solve problems in enterprising and proactive ways
Self-motivated and organized work attitude necessary
Communication skills (oral, written, and interpersonal) must be at a professional level; must be able to work effectively with multiple constituencies in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
