General Job Description:
The Center for Imaging Science is seeking a Research Assistant with an understanding of techniques and the underlying science, gained from personal experience. The individual will perform and evaluate research methods; operate attendant computing equipment; provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.
The Research Assistant assists the PIs in the Center for Imaging Science (CIS) at Johns Hopkins University in reaching research goals. Because the technology and research goals in the CIS are diverse, the Research Assistant must first and foremost be adaptable. The data analysis performed by the Research Assistant includes but is not limited to, basic manual delineation of anatomical structures, shape analysis of these structures, preprocessing MRI and statistical analysis of data (voxel based and regional based). The ideal candidate will be responsible, flexible and independent in order to perform diverse duties related to collecting, analyzing and archiving data.
The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:
Assist a research team to carry out and analyze anatomical, functional MRI data, as well as, selected research protocols and experimental approaches for research projects.
Will be responsible for assigned daily tasks within research projects.
Adhere to our published methods (not others) for current experimental work by investigating published protocols and discussing them with PI.
Assist with single subject and group analysis of anatomical data, data quality assurance, data compilation, and statistical analysis.
Maintain databases to keep track of data archiving and analysis.
Assist in scoring, coding, and verifying research data.
Archive data related to ongoing image studies including the archival of unprocessed quantitative data as well as the generation and compilation of statistical data.
Assist with the administration of anatomical and/or functional MRI scans and mock scans.
Supervise students involved in analysis of anatomic and functional MRI data.
Attend and participate in research meetings involving, but not limited to, assistance with grant preparation, manuscript preparation, quality control issues, and protocols and when necessary prepare and present updates on relevant project tasks.
Enhance professional growth and development through relevant case conferences, educational programs, in-service meetings, workshops, conferences, and seminars
Keep an activity wikipage logbook, laboratory wikipage logbook and will update online materials as needed.
Participate in video conference calls with external collaborators; and prepare initial draft poster and PowerPoint presentations for conferences and complete as needed.
Minimum Educational Requirements
Minimum B.S./B.A. in an appropriate discipline (e.g., biology, biomedical engineering, computer science, physics).
Some related experience in a research laboratory that applies techniques of anatomical, functional, and/or structural imaging analysis is required.
Special skills and knowledge:
Background in scientific research, familiar with skills including literature searches, planning of research projects, experimentation, interpretation of data, and preparation for publications.
Knowledge of human and small animal anatomy and physiology as well as general biology.
Knowledge of normal/abnormal growth and development throughout the age continuum.
Must pursue education or training necessary to perform at the level of competence required to incorporate the hardware, software, technologies, protocols, and ideas relevant to specific job responsibilities.
Ability to participate in a team environment.
Ability to give and accept critical feedback.
Ability to be proactive and a quick-learner after a brief period of training
Must be able to organize and manage time and manage multiple tasks.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to develop and maintain effective communications and working relationships with other employees.
Ability to demonstrate professional behavior by adhering to departmental and organizational policies and procedures, and assuming authority appropriately and maintain personal grooming consistent with professional appearance.
Related work experience:
The position requires a solid background in using computers and running experiments. Employee should be proficient with Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Power Point, Word, and Access to help the laboratory meet presentation preparation and reporting goals.
Individual must demonstrate competence in all aspects of data acquisition and analysis, handling of small animal, and working as part of a research team.
Must possess experience using Windows, Mac, and Linux workstations
The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform viewing of a computer monitor, analyzing images, reading and inspecting small defects or parts of various images or documents.
Ascending and descending stairs is common for this position in order to scan small animal.
Work primarily involves the use of fingers rather than the whole hand. Work includes keyboarding, use of office machines and other laboratory equipment.
Employee may be exposed to intense magnetic fields when assisting with MRI scanning and should not have any conditions in which this would be inadvisable.
Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication.
Must be able to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.
Must have manual dexterity sufficient to perform various keyboard functions.
Must be physically present at the assigned job site.
Familiarity with Matlab/R/Python, Seg3D, Analyze/AVW and other biomedical imaging tools is desired.
