The major activity of the Division of Hematology is research. Building on the distinguished accomplishments of the Division's founding members and early leaders, our current faculty continues to work at the cutting edge of molecular and cellular biology, pathophysiology, and applied clinical research. This work is carried out both as investigator-initiated projects within the Division and through collaborative efforts with colleagues at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, basic science departments at the University, the Division of Oncology, and other Divisions in the Department of Medicine.
The Division of Hematology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Scientist/Engineer Assistant. The research project will model the bleeding disorder and polycystic kidney disease using cell biology, biochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and microfluidic methods. The study aims to discover the mechanisms governing the biological functions and seek new methodologies for therapeutics testing and treatment of related diseases.
The successful candidate will help with the routine laboratory work such as maintaining lab common reagents and consumables. Under limited supervision, s/he will also help with the research to model diseases such as bleeding disorder and polycystic kidney disease. In details, s/he will perform the experiments related to biochemistry and cell biology, such as qPCR, electrophoresis, immunoblotting, cloning, gene editing, bioengineering of human pluripotent stem cells into endothelial and kidney organoids, and fluorescence microscopy. The position requires a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Cell biology or a related field and at least six months' experience in a biological research laboratory. This position will be a joint position between Dr. Hongxia Fu and Dr. Benjamin Freedman's laboratories (75% in Fu lab and 25% in Freedman lab).
Experimental duties include:
Bioengineering differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into endothelial and kidney organoids
Microscopy immunofluorescence, confocal, wide-field, live cell
Biochemistry and molecular biology qPCR, electrophoresis, immunoblotting, cloning
Computing and analysis Illustrator, Powerpoint, Excel, Word, Image
Laboratory organization and maintenance
Orienting and training new staff
Documentation daily record of work performed in files and laboratory notebook

Bachelor's Degree in Biology or related subject plus a minimum of 3-6 months experience
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
