The Stanford Center for Internet and Society (CIS) is looking for an experienced, innovative, entrepreneurial individual to direct the Center's Consumer Privacy focus area.
CIS is a preeminent academic research center addressing the legal challenges of new technologies. CIS works to ensure that new technologies and legal regimes serve the public interest. A successful candidate for this job will be able to develop practical, interdisciplinary solutions for pressing technology law problems and work to make them a reality.
Specifically, the Director will help determine the strategic vision for the Center's efforts regarding consumer privacy and emerging technologies. The Director will identify issues that impact consumer privacy, and then study these matters and develop proposals that promote the public interest. The Director will collaborate with CIS Directors, including Al Gidari and Daphne Keller. The Director will bring together companies, technologists, civil liberties groups, citizens, and policymakers to pursue winning policy solutions. The Director may present these policy proposals before legislatures and administrative bodies, at corporate headquarters, and in court. The Director will report to CIS Faculty Director Barbara van Schewick.
The Director will also write for the CIS blog; work with students interested in privacy and civil liberties issues; organize research meetings and outreach; and engage in the intellectual life of the Law School generally.
Qualifications for this position include a strong background in privacy law and policy, familiarity with privacy enhancing technologies, and a commitment to the public interest. The Director must have exceptional research, writing and advocacy skills.
The ideal candidate will be a visionary and strategic leader capable of building external resources (including fundraising), identifying and managing high-impact projects, and collaboratively formulating and implementing policy decisions for the organization.
Help establish research agenda and strategic vision for privacy work at CIS
Conduct and manage original research, outreach, and advocacy related to consumer privacy
Manage CIS communications around privacy
Field, answer, and assign inquiries from the press, officials, industry, non-profits and others related to privacy
Coordinate efforts to raise awareness of CIS privacy projects and events
Manage CIS fundraising efforts around privacy
Monitor funding opportunities
Work with Development to write funding proposals
Work with executive director to manage budget for privacy-related work
Work with other Directors and personnel to collaborate on projects
Plan privacy-related events (e.g., speaker series, workshops, conferences)
Hire, mentor, and/or supervise fellows, students, and other researchers
