SUMMARY: This position performs the full range of tasks of a network telephony administrator in the administration of the University’s infrastructure, upgrading and supporting the University’s telephony network. This position will provide assistance in the support of the Universities phone services. This position assists in planning the work and implements equipment replacement projects and assists in maintaining the networking groups’ telephony support services, backing up and maintaining that equipment. In addition, the position will assist supervising and mentoring the network work-studies, teaching them IT service management, Skype for Business, and problem solving. The position will attend meetings as a representative of MSU Denver telephony. This position independently considers the impact and consequences of its decisions and solves problems within the full range of telephony and networking at MSU Denver.

30% Troubleshooting and Repair
Diagnoses VOIP and traditional telephone-related problems, often involving contact with end users, to identify symptoms.
Identifies if the problem is customer understanding of the technology or an physical problem requiring a resolution.
Determines if a refinement of the solution is needed or instruction of the customer or a combination of both.
Diagnoses the extent of the problem using tools, such as Solarwind’s Server and Application Monitor or Polycom’s RealPresence Resource Manager, and personal knowledge of the environment. Example where problem could arise are for all MSU Denver phones and workstations, University servers and the Internet.
Isolates faults to a particular Local Area Network (LAN) and/or cabling system/set of components, examines it for non-conformance, and/or utilizes network test equipment such as protocol analyzer to isolate the fault.
Engages in repair effort or will suggest course of action as appropriate
25% Telephony Network Management and Monitoring
Responsible for the telephony network management and monitoring systems (Solarwind’s Network Performance Management or Server and Application Monitor, Polycom’s RealPresence Resource Manager, or Infoblox NetMRI). These provide continuous monitoring and automated paging to Metro IT support staff, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in the event that one of the 700 network devices or 2.000 phone or their associated 4,000 data circuits are malfunctioning.
Continuously monitors for suspected security violations and facilitates inventory control and operating system upgrades.
Develops telephone reports on the performance of the Skype for Business and other telephone components.
15% Supporting and Growing the Physical Environment
Designs the layout, implements and manages network and telephone cabling such as Category 6 and 6a wiring, 50um (MM) multimode and 9um (SM) fiber optics into student computer laboratories, patch panels, network electronic equipment in phone closets, to faculty and staff workstations.
Responsible for laying of the cable, attachment of connectors, and testing of the result with test equipment.
15% Telephony Environment
Installs, configures, and tests telephony and network equipment such as Voice over IP (VOIP) session border controllers (SBC), session Internet protocol (SIP), analog telephone adapters, switches, and wireless access points. Currently, this is approximately 700 distinct electronic devices and 2,000 phones in numerous locations including Metro South, Center for Visual Arts, Detroit Institute of Musical Education, Medical Clinic in Aurora, and Quigg Newton.
10% Strategic Planning
Assists in devising, recommending and implementing strategies in the design of our VOIP and traditional telephone environment over wide area networks (Internet, Metro South and other remote locations).
In collaboration with the security and network coordinator devises, recommends implements and maintains strategies in the design of the telephony security architecture.
Both of these duties are done where little or no precedent exists, so knowledge of theory is utilized.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in a field of study related to the work assignment, or the equivalent education and experience. Two years of experience in telephony is equivalent to one year of education.
Experience providing customer service in a professional organization
Experience with network protocols such as TCP/IP, 802.1q, and basic network monitoring tools such as SolarWinds NPM, Infoblox NetMRI, RealPresence Resource Manager, and well as various operating systems such as UNIX, Mac OSX, and Windows.
One year of full time work experience in an enterprise environment in the support of networking and wireless systems.
Experience supporting VOIP, Skype for Business, and traditional telephony solutions in an enterprise environment.
Ability to walk 2 miles; climb an 8-foot ladder; carry up to 50 pounds; be able to identify colors of cabling/wires.

Experience supporting networking and telephony services in a higher education environment.
Experience with Polycom’s and Audiocodes’ phone technologies
