Berkeley Lab's Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts (EAEI) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar Employee. Berkeley Lab's EAEI Division performs innovative research to achieve clean, affordable, and accessible energy systems. The successful applicant will conduct system- and process-modeling, data synthesis, and contribute to techno-economic analysis to evaluate the economics, energy efficiency, and environmental impacts of emerging material and chemical technologies for methane and hydrogen gas separation and stationary storage. The successful applicant will develop new methods for predicting system performance metrics from material performance metrics (deliverable capacity, parasitic energy) created and used these metrics to screen material databases for promising materials..
What You Will Do:
Research, develop, and code new and existing algorithms, tools and technologies to meet data intensive, data driven science challenges.
Evaluate existing and new techniques and results for high-throughput screening of materials.
Research and implement physical models that connect outputs of fundamental simulations with engineering properties of materials.
Contribute to techno-economic and market analyses to evaluate potential impacts of deploying targeted materials in key industrial applications and sectors.
Work in a multidisciplinary team environment, including backgrounds in biology, chemistry, earth sciences, statistics, physics, energy technologies, materials science, and computer science.
Analyze and summarize data and present findings at internal lab meetings and scientific conferences.
Publish in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific research papers and reports.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Participate in routine Sustainable Energy System Group meetings.
Assist with mentoring of interns.
Ensure that results are translated to industry impact.
Contribute to research proposals and grants as needed.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Computational Science, Material Science, Physics, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering or related field.
Strong programming experience and familiarity with software versioning systems.
Experience in systems or process modeling.
Knowledge of gas separation or storage technologies and adsorption materials a plus.
Evidence of ability to publish results in relevant journals.
An ability to work in an integrated diverse team environment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Keen interest in solving science challenges, particularly in energy.
Keep an accurate and detailed physical or digital laboratory notebook.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Prior experience working with or developing and maintaining databases of nanoporous materials data
Prior experience conducting techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment
Keen interest in multidisciplinary research to influence policy and technology development.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
