Involves developing, implementing, and monitoring campus environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and ensure a safe workplace. Includes hazardous materials control, emergency preparedness, fire protection, radiological safety, accident prevention, air and water quality, and other EH&S programs and policies; or provides technical support for these programs.
Manages multiple campus EH&S programs within multiple disciplines, and through subordinate managers and/or supervisors, manages the professional staff responsible for implementing these programs. Develops new programs in response to changing regulations and ensures campus awareness of and compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, etc. Oversees specialized technical programs and serves as a campus expert within these fields.
The EH&S unit is responsible for monitoring compliance for all environmental, health and safety programs intended to minimize or prevent injuries and illnesses and to protect the quality of the surrounding environment. EH&S advises the campus community of responsibilities with respect to health, safety and environmental issues; recommends appropriate corrective actions; and helps implement new health and safety programs. EH&S also acts as liaison between UC Santa Cruz and various external agencies and regulatory bodies, including coordination with the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) and other UC Campuses. EH&S is the lead campus agency for insuring campus adherence to federal, state and UC compliance and regulatory standards specific to environmental, health and safety programs. EH&S programs include a broad and complex range of disciplines including areas such as laboratory and research safety, injury and illness prevention, industrial hygiene, environmental management, radiation safety, hazardous materials safety, ergonomics, wellness and biosafety.

Must possess a valid license to drive in the State of California and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are stored or are present.
Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
Must pass a pre-employment physical with the ability to re-certify biennially.
Ability to wear a respirator in accordance with the California Code of Regulations Title 8, 5144.
Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience / training.
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, federal and state rules, regulations, laws, etc.
Excellent management skills to effectively lead and direct subordinate staff.
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment.
Excellent skills to create, develop, implement EH&S projects / programs.
