Involves providing individualized services to students who are underrepresented, low income, first generation college students, and / or otherwise at a higher risk of experiencing academic difficulty, to help students succeed. Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success. Includes specializations in particular underrepresented groups, particular academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs), or success in particular academic programs.
Provides the full range of assessment, counseling, and advice to targeted students, and makes referrals to organization and community resources. Works independently, receiving guidance on complicated problems / situations.
Under the guidance of the Director, the VETS Program Coordinator provides direct services to STARS students and coordinates programs to support the academic success, retention and graduation of STARS students. The incumbent provides academic and personal counseling/guidance and manages student cases to propel their development and success as university students. The Program Coordinator oversees the VETS program within STARS, including direction of programming; organization of VETS Center; and selection, training, and supervision of VETS intern and peer mentors, engaging in professional development to implement best practices and research based methodologies. The incumbent is also considered the expert in veterans' issues and provides academic and personal counseling/guidance to student veterans. In addition, the Program Coordinator collaborates with campus partners including the colleges, academic departments, faculty, student service units and student organizations on retention/student success initiatives. The incumbent is readily accessible to faculty, staff, and students and coordinates communication and student case management. The Program Coordinator tracks and reports data on the VETS population to the Director. The incumbent will be familiar with Business Continuity Planning. The incumbent will supervise and train student staff and engage in professional development to implement best practices and research based methodologies.
Selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional environment.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/ training.
Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
Demonstrated experience and achievement advising and/or counseling students who are military veterans; have transferred from other colleges; are older than traditional aged students; or are student parents.
Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
