Public Safety dispatching is primarily a communications and customer service position that requires strong verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of PLNU Public Safety protocols. The Staff Dispatcher serves as a vital link between the caller and the responding Public Safety officer. She or he handles various types of calls for service ranging from simple jump-start requests to serious medical or life threatening emergencies. The ability to calmly manage pressure situations is an absolute must for the Staff Dispatcher. Must maintain a high level of customer service and a strong knowledge of the campus (locations of buildings/offices, university personnel, events, etc.). In addition, he or she must possess the ability to prioritize tasks as it is not uncommon for many different situations to arise at once.
Time: Full time
Subject to various shift hours based on departmental operational needs.
Answering phone calls to the Public Safety business line and emergency line and dispatching officers accordingly.
Greeting and assisting walk-in customers to the Department of Public Safety.
Monitoring the Public Safety video surveillance system for all PLNU campuses.
Acting as an operator of the university mass notification system, access control system, alarm monitoring software.
Issuing PLNU parking permits and bicycle permits while acting as an administrator for the PLNU vehicle registration software system (iParq) - maintaining accurate student, staff, and faculty vehicle and permit records.
Issuing employee and student ID cards - monitoring and tracking ID card charges, supply inventory, and technical support issues.
Assisting with information/background checks for special investigators.
Interfaces with other campus departments regarding parking reservation requests and special event assistance.
Assisting in the training, supervision, and scheduling of student dispatchers.
Receiving and logging lost & found items and collaborating with main campus lost and found coordinator.
Helping maintain an organized and professional Public Safety office.
Covering Welcome Center duties as needed (main entrance to campus).
Strong skills in spoken communication and customer service experience (bilingual Spanish/English a plus).
Basic knowledge of access control software/hardware systems, surveillance camera hardware/software systems, CAD software systems, mass notification software systems, and ID card creation software/hardware.
Experience as a law-enforcement or security agency dispatcher or experience using two-way radio communications preferred.
Ability to type 40-50 WPM with 90% accuracy.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Microsoft Windows software.
High level attention to detail and a good memory.
Strict adherence to the Public Safety confidentiality policy.
Ability to handle pressure situations in an emergency.
Strong multitasking skills and a proactive approach to all job responsibilities.
The work is primarily sedentary and may require sitting for extended periods of time. Use of computer equipment: computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Vision to read documents, email and other correspondence, and reports on paper and computer monitor. Hearing and speaking to communicate effectively with others in person and by phone. Will also stand, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 10 lbs throughout the day.
