The University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Research Specialist for the Department of Pathology Research. This position will function as a single specialist in a laboratory setting and is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to research project(s) and overseeing laboratory research activities.

Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies.
Perform laboratory research activities such as: recombinant DNA techniques, protein purification, oxidation and transport assays using radio labeled compounds, cultures and specimens; autoradiograms and photomicrographs, animal surgery, etc.
Conduct library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. May assist with presenting research.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, or field of study related to the animal science.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience including 2 years in the relevant research specialization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to maintain compatible working relationships with supervisor and other laboratory technical personnel in order to accomplish the goals of the laboratories' projects. Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications. Knowledge and assurance of compliance issues related to laboratory activities. Ability to perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty. Skill in interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet software applications. Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform simple equipment repairs.
