The Department of Health Professions at James Madison University is seeking a visionary individual with academic leadership experience and professional stature in a discipline relevant to the unit. Housed within the College of Health and Behavioral Studies, the Department of Health Professions boasts nationally-recognized and accredited programs in athletic training (AT); dietetics; health services administration; occupational therapy (OT); and physician assistant (PA) studies.
This position is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment at the Associate/Full Professor rank with consideration of tenure upon appointment. The Academic Unit Head reports to the Dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS) and serves on the CHBS Leadership Council. Health Professions is one of eight academic units in the College. The desired starting date is July 1, 2018.
Growth at James Madison University has enabled The College of Health and Behavioral Studies to open two new dynamic leadership opportunities for a Department of Health Sciences and a Department of Health Professions. Previously administered within a single unit, academic and administrative functions supporting nine undergraduate and graduate degrees have been reorganized into two distinctive, autonomous departments. The successful candidate will join a strong and engaged faculty at one of the nation's outstanding public universities.
The Academic Unit Head recruits, mentors and evaluates a diverse and talented faculty, and collaborates with program directors on both strategic and operational matters. The Academic Unit Head articulates an appreciation for and vision of teaching and scholarly activities specific to the health professions and congruent with the Institution's vision of being “the model of the engaged university.”
The successful candidate will lead a complex academic unit that includes both graduate and undergraduate professional programs requiring didactic and clinical education while meeting accreditation standards. The candidate will support faculty within the framework of the unit, college and university, while promoting a culture of interprofessional teaching and scholarship. Expectations include being supportive of the College's strategic priorities, and in particular, of collaborative opportunities among faculty and programs.
- Advanced degree in one of the areas represented in the department or a related health profession.
- Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, scholarship and service commensurate with expectations of a tenured associate / full professor.
- Evidence of collaborative academic administrative and leadership experience.
- Successful track record of establishing or maintaining relationships with external sites for clinical rotations, internships and field work.
- Experience with national accreditation standards in at least one professional program.
