Using specialized knowledge of learning theory, counsels students and develops and implements programs to students to enhance their academic success.
Provides a limited range of professional knowledge and strategies related to learning skills for students. Works independently on standard program presentation. May receive guidance from higher level Student Academic Specialists in adapting counseling to specific learning styles and linguistic issues.
Under the supervision of the Director of Learning Support Services and Assistant Director of Learning Support Services, the Modified Supplemental Instruction (MSI)/Tutor Coordinator will be responsible for the implementation, and coordination of the tutorial and Modified Supplemental Instruction programs including the selection, hiring, training and supervision of undergraduate subject tutors and Learning Assistants that provide peer learning opportunities for over 1/3 (approximately 6000 students) of the undergraduate student population in all academic disciplines. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Learning Support Services, establish and carry out procedures that follow University and UAW policies for over 200 tutors each quarter. The MSI/Tutor Coordinator will also be responsible for compiling data, writing reports, representing the MSI/Tutorial components on campus wide committees, and working closely with staff and faculty. Working with the Assistant Director of Learning Support Services, the MSI/Tutor Coordinator will ensure that all UCSC students receive effective academic support while placing special emphasis on the learning needs of EOP, DRC, Transfer, and students experiencing academic difficulty and addressing education equity issues.

Skills in judgment, decision-making and problem solving skills. Ability to review, understand and effectively apply policies and regulations to insure a smooth-running tutorial operation.
Ability to develop knowledge of specific learning theory, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural issues in applying academic support for students.
Ability to develop knowledge of current and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline specific; student-population specific).
