Plan, coordinate, and supervise the activities of personnel in Microbiology. Ensure the validity and accuracy of test results.
Prepare work schedule to provide adequate coverage and efficient use of personnel, using flexible (days/hour) staffing in response to volume of patients/procedures. Determine priority of work to be accomplished. Assume technical responsibility 24 hrs/day 7 days/week for assigned discipline. As needed perform duties as described in the job description for a medical technologist.
Interview and plan orientation and training schedules for new employees assigned to the department and delegate responsibility for orientation and training to members of the department staff.
Develop quality control program in conjunction with published guidelines, monitor statistical reports and maintain its operation. Assist technologist in "troubleshooting" procedures reagents, equipment, and any other work-related problems (such as workload studies).
Develop preventative maintenance programs for instruments in conjunction with the Biomedical Engineering Department and maintain appropriate records for each piece of equipment. Monitor the performance of preventative maintenance to ensure instruments are operational and functioning properly at all times.
Oversee collection, identification, transport, storage, and processing of specimens to ensure quality and appropriateness of specimen before testing. Verify test results are accurate prior to release. Help with workload by performing tests as necessary.
Maintain a current written procedure manual, review and revise as needed, at least once a year. Reevaluate current procedures to make modifications or to replace with new procedures. Assist pathologist with development of new procedures.
Demonstrate leadership and management skills when dealing with staff. Collaborate with other lab supervisors and coordinate activities of subordinates. Accept and give constructive criticism. Function as a role model for staff. Convey a positive image of the hospital and foster positive interdepartmental relations. Answer questions of physician nurses concerning laboratory tests, accept complaints, initiate corrective action, and document activities.
Work with Laboratory Director to contain costs and gain efficiencies. Meet or surpass financial performance goals exercising judgment to flex expenditures for staff and expense in response to volume of patients, procedures or departmental goals. Monitor, evaluate and report progress towards achieving established goals, including TAT goals. Identify and justify new or replacement capital equipment as needed and for budget preparation. Prepare list of supplies needed and maintain adequate inventory for department.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Certified as an MT by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) OR Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel (NCA) OR certification by other nationally recognized certifying agency acceptable to the Laboratory Director.
Two years of satisfactory employment in a medical laboratory as a Registered Medical Technologist.
