Our department of Intercollegiate Athletics, has an outstanding opportunity for a Learning Specialist.
Within the Student-Athlete Academic Services unit, the Learning Specialist(s) will specialize in working with the high-risk student athlete population including student-athletes with learning disabilities and students who are under-prepared. The learning specialist will prioritize and complete ongoing tasks following established departmental and university policies, as well as Pacific-12 Conference and NCAA guidelines. This position reports to the Director of Learning Resources in Student-Athlete Academic Services.
The employee will work independently and prioritize and complete ongoing tasks following established departmental, the University of Washington, Pacific-12 Conference, and NCAA guidelines and university policies. Reporting line is to the Director of Learning Resources.
Develop, coordinate and implement individualized academic support plans for identified student-athletes including the assessment and evaluation of individual students to determine learning needs and additional support. Conduct one-on-one academic meetings with a caseload of students, teach learning strategies and address academic needs. Work with academic counselors and academic coordinators to review student athletes' class scheduling, degree plans, tutorial services, University of Washington and NCAA academic standing and progress toward degree.
Work with the Learning Resources team to recruit, hire, train and evaluate tutors. Assist with the quarterly scheduling of tutoring for student-athletes using a computerized data management system. Coordinate study table for assigned students and teams.
Hire and assist in training instructors and tutors for Summer LEAP program. Assist in the planning, implementation, teaching and evaluation of the Summer LEAP program.
Create and facilitate workshops for small groups of students on a variety of study skills topics. Act as resource and provide training as needed for staff and coaches in the areas of learning development, learning strategies and identification of learning disabilities.
Serve as liaison to the office of Disability Resources for Students and help coordinate intake interviews, learning disability testing, and follow-through with accommodations and services.
Assist with orientation, summer programs, recruiting and other programs or duties as assigned by the Director of Learning Resources and/or the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student Development.
Provide consistent and frequent communication, verbally and in writing, with academic staff and coaches about the progress of assigned student-athletes including weekly academic coaches' meetings.
Other duties as assigned by Director of Learning Resources or Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Development.
Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Pacific-12 Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
A Master's Degree in Special Education, Education, Educational Psychology or a related field (related work experience and BA may be substituted for master's degree). Three to five years' experience in working with high risk/learning disabled student in an education environment.
Outstanding communication skills both oral and written; including skill in writing memos/reports. Knowledge and expertise in effective learning strategies, assessment tools, motivational techniques and study skill development. Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA guidelines. Ability to work independently and following through on duties with minimal direction, counsel and advise students with professional, academic, and/or personal questions and concerns, interact diplomatically with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, and establish and interact collaboratively and effectively with other staff, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and the University of Washington community.
Knowledge of regulations and laws associated with ADA and accommodations for the learning disabled. Outstanding listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills in work with academics staff and student-athletes. Work collaboratively in situations that may be time sensitive or otherwise highly pressured, with a variety of individuals including students, coaches, academic personnel, faculty and staff.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Some travel as well as evening and weekend hours required.
Experience working with student-athletes in a NCAA Division 1 environment. A working knowledge of University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics, the University of Washington, Pacific 12 Conference, and NCAA policies, rules, and regulations.
