We have an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director, Patents, a critical role in providing overall management of the UW intellectual property portfolio and the staff supporting the portfolio. This position will appeal to an individual with significant patent expertise and management skills who prefers to oversee a broad variety and large number of innovations as well as manage people including inventors, outside counsel, and CoMotion staff. This position requires a desire to manage multiple projects simultaneously, a strong ability to prioritize, and comfort with making decisions in a rapidly evolving environment. This position is key to providing an in-house perspective on the value of various filings, and the most appropriate strategy to invest, and to advise when it does not make sense to invest, with a focus on patents that will ultimately cover a product in a defensible manner.
The Assistant Director, Patents has significant responsibility for providing expertise in patent decisions and investment, and will coordinate filings, provide guidance to inventors and CoMotion managers, manage the patent budget, as well as managing the staff that focus on this work. The Assistant Director will collaborate with the Director, Innovation Development on strategies for effective management of patent prosecution, with the expectation that these strategies will be the subject of ongoing improvement and adaption to the changing innovation ecosystem. This position will supervise and lead a team of patent experts to develop new initiatives and strategic processes to impact the entire team and patents for the entire University of Washington.
This position will have day-to-day oversight over the investment of resources in UW's patent portfolio. In addition to managing processes, the budget, and internal staff, this position will use significant patent expertise to draft, prepare and file patent applications and manage patent prosecution. Ongoing evaluation and implementation of effective processes, as well as adjusting practices in responses to ongoing efforts to strongly support the innovation ecosystem, are a core function. In this capacity, the Assistant Director, Patents will have a significant opportunity to impact both the culture of CoMotion, and the understanding and appreciation of patents across the UW. Management of this patent portfolio has a significant impact on the strategic goals, business decisions, budget and revenue of CoMotion and the University, as well as impacting the entrepreneurial goals of our world class research faculty.
Develop and maintain processes and strategies to effectively manage the UW's patent budget on a day-to-day basis 15%;
This position will manage the patent program at CoMotion which includes a patent agent or patent attorney who will also be involved in patent filing preparation and prosecution, and two paralegals and this position is responsible for staffing, training and supervising the patent team 30%;
Evaluation and assessment of invention disclosures from UW researchers 15%;
Prepare and file US provisional patent application 20%;
Research and prepare intellectual property landscape analyses 10%;
Work with outside counsel to manage patent filings and billing 5%;
Educate and advise inventors and CoMotion staff on intellectual property issues 2.5%;
Represent the department and the University of Washington in professional functions as appropriate 2.5%.
Work with other CoMotion units to identify IP procedural efficiencies within CoMotion and the University of Washington
Coordinate overall strategy and priorities for patent unit, including IP budget, with Director, Innovation Development
Collaborates with the Director, Innovation Development in the review and formation of policy and procedures, and in developing strategies for improving the management of intellectual property
Build strong relationships and trust with UW innovators and CoMotion staff
Master's Degree in life sciences or related field
Current USPTO registration
Intellectual Property Attorney or Patent Agent
Five years of experience in a law firm or intellectual property
Proven experience as a successful supervisor/team manager
Excellent communication skills
Ability to coordinate intellectual property strategy with overall goals of CoMotion
Experience in perfecting intellectual property rights and knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, and procedures regarding intellectual property, including patents, copyright, trademark and trade secrets.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Knowledge of intellectual property practices in higher education
