Summary: The UNIX Systems Administrator III is responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux operating systems and server hardware. This position participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure and ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, policies and standards.
Builds and maintains Linux servers to meet business needs, security requirements, and IS standards.
Works with project teams to design and develop systems according to project requirements.
Recognizes and troubleshoots problems with Linux server hardware, operating systems, and applications software.
Facilitates operating system enhancements to improve the reliability and performance of Linux systems.
Regularly interacts with peers in other functional areas, managers, and customers; interactions may involve controversial situations or trying to influence actions.
Creates standard procedures for analyzing information and determining course of action.
Maintains the security and confidentiality of any proprietary or sensitive information or data in any medium regarding the university or its students, faculty, or staff. Accessing or disclosing such information or data must be deemed necessary for the performance of one’s job responsibilities and must be authorized by the employee’s supervisor.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree and five to eight years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Extensive knowledge of Linux computer operations and familiarity with shell programming and scripting.
Ability to work on problems of diverse scope and complexity.
Ability to use professional knowledge, experience, and analytical criteria to make decisions and act independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments.
Ability to work autonomously; receives no instruction on routine work and general instructions on new assignments. Erroneous decisions can result in critical delays in schedules or department’s operation and may jeopardize overall business objectives.
Available to work after hours and/or weekends and on-call, as specified by supervisor.
Ability to developing programs with programming languages such as bash, Perl, or Python.
Demonstrated competency with application software such as Apache, Tomcat, or sendmail.
Demonstrated competency with configuration management tools (i.e. Puppet or CFEngine).
Understanding DHCP, LDAP, NTP, DNS and other critical infrastructure components.
Operational knowledge of Oracle and mySQL.
Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Hands on experience with enterprise class server hardware.
Advanced degrees in Computer Science or Engineering.
Responsible for own work.
